We are currently 'attempting' an install of Exchange 2003 on a brand new box. This is a FRESH install and this will be the only thing running on the machine other than a simple intranet CMS later on. So far I have set up an exchange admin account and it has FULL rights on the domain. The box is joined to the domain and logs on accordingly. However, I cannot for the life of me get a forest prep to run. The error is the standard 'you do not have permission to update the AD Schema or the server is too busy.' roughly quoted, but I am sure most of you are familiar with it. So that is where I stand with this. I was curious if I might need to reboot the PDC to trigger a reset on the account that I am using to install the exchange server or if my log files might give some insight into the problem. I have already added the registry entry that allows the schema to be updated...or verified that it is set to '1'. Hiya chap, can you delete the existing Exchange installation log file, then try again. When setup fails can you post the entire log. Cheers A

Absolutely. I just cleared the entire log and started from scratch with where I am getting stuck. Yeah...one DC (Win 2000) and we have between 150-200 people on it throughout the day. I was planning a reboot after hours tonight. I can't reboot during the day...unless you want me to forward my phone to YOUR number...hehe... I was curious if a reboot might fix the issue due to a possible access problem with the creation of the new account in the AD. Wouldn't matter for a regular user, but since this is a pretty high level user that I created it might actually trigger something... I will reboot and let you know. The user is a member of: Administrators Backup Operators Domain Admins Domain Users Enterprise Admins Group Policy Creator Owner Schema Admins I duplicated my existing Administrator account and named it to the Exchanage Admin user so I am pretty sure it is not denied anything anywhere. Am I missing a group that I should be a member of? I still suspect the reboot might sort things out...damn antiquated mess that I am working with..:) Server 2003 won't be installed here until 2009 on the damn PDC...:) I have only been here 4 months...we still use an old KIX script to give users network access and printer permissions...not using active directory to its full extent in that regard yet either...That is a whole different thread in itself... I removed that one already. I didn't think it was needed and I know that it can sometimes be restrictive. I am the ONLY person here that has even a clue about how AD works. The other two are 'old school' and the guy I replaced was just worthless..:) I am at least lucky they let me toss fat $$ at 4 new boxes and gave one for me to install exchange on fresh...so I can't complain that much..:) Chris

I was also would like to know what 'roles' I need installed on the box that the exchange server is going on. Maybe I am not fully installed on THIS box and that is causing the issue. The logs seem to show missing 'services' and those are related to 'roles' if I am not mistaken.
