We are currently upgrading our Exchange server environment to Exchange 2007, We purchased three 64bit hardware servers,  1 CAS, 1 UM, and 1 Mailbox and Hub transport server. Mailbox server has been installed and you can move mailboxes between the Mailbox server and Exchange 2003 Backend server. We also installed CAS, but no we have a problem. Users on exchange 2003 server cannot access their mailboxes via the CAS server, but users on the Mailbox server can access their mailboxes, Is there something i am missing with the configuration,. It does give me 2007 authenication logon page but when you put your username and password in it comes back with HTTP 404 error, file or directory not found.  What am i missing so far i think i have covered most of the blank lines.

Below blog post explains how CAS co-exists with legacy Exchange back-end servers:

I see that Henrik, and i followed that and also am getting the same error, Outlook Web Access could not find a mailbox for DOMAIN\USER. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the following: The mailbox may be stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange 2003 server, or the Active Directory user account was created recently and has not yet replicated to the Active Directory site where this Client Access server is hosted.

I understand what the article is saying but am not seeing anything that i need to change, redirector just comes back with the same error,,

The way I've made the Exchange 2007 CAS server host both 2003 and 2007 mailboxes was by having http://mail.domain.com automatically redirect everyone to https://mail.domain.com/exchange this redirection allows access to both.

Hey just an update guys as to whats going on, Microsoft guys fCUKed my CAS server real good, i could get to the server externally and access the other exchange sites through CAS, my problem was one of the exchange 2003 servers are not allowing this to work and we pin point what the problem was, The exchange folder in IIS is giving us problems for the one server, we deleted and recreated it, but nothing seem to work, We made a comparison with some of the other servers and everything looks the same but for this one 2003 server, its not working. NOw we are at a point of moving users for that site to 2007 and leave the working sites on 2003 up until they purchase new servers for those sites. What could cause exchange 2003 folder to go astray,,,

First I created a directory called CustomErrors underneath the c:\wwwroot\inetpub directory and created a file called https-redirect.asp and put the following code inside:
<%If Request.ServerVariables("HTTPS") = "off" Then Response.Redirect "https://" & Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST") & "/exchange"End If%>
Then in IIS manager I did the following:

Under properties of the Default Web Site, I went to the Directory Security tab and under Secure communications I clicked the Edit button and ensured that Require secure channel was checked.
Then under the Custom Errors tab I edited the HTTP error 403;4 with Message type URL and URL with /CustomErrors/https-redirect.asp
Then under the Home Directory tab I modified the The content for this resource should come from to A redirection to a URL, Redirect to: /exchange, and put checks in A directory below URL entered  and A permanent redirection for this resource
Under properties of the CustomErrors folder. I went to the Directory Security tab and under Secure communication I clicked the Edit button and removed the check for Requrie secure channel
What this configuration does is allows a user to type http://mail.domain.com and automatically be redirected to https://mail.domain.com/exchange. The CAS server is then responsible for directing traffic to the appropriate mailbox server.  By using exchange for the virtual directory it will work for both 2003 and 2007 mailboxes.

We can finally close this call, Thanks to everyone that has helped me with this problem. Henrik Walther, thanks a lot. I managed to find out that this was all permissions problem and everything works fine, users can access their mailboxes on exchange 2003 and 2007 via http://dotr.ecape.gov.za/exchange. I really am happy with the results.
