Scouser -> Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 3:02:56 PM)

Guys I have kicked off my Exchange Migration and as usual have a few issues.

Here is what I have done:
Installed Exchange on new server (additional server)
(Member Server Windows 2003 SP2 R2)
Serviced Packed up to SP2
Re-Created the Storage Groups + Mailbox Stores

Following Article: KB822931
Kicked off the Public Folder Replication (New server shows 'Local Modified' not In Sync?)

I have now begun moving Mailboxes?

That is all I have done to date.

I am now confused regards the order I should do things? When do I switch over to the new server? When do I:

Rehome the Schedule + Free Busy Folder
Rehome the Recipient Update Service
Designate Routing Group Master
Create Site Replication Service Instance

When do I tell the MD to amend his IMAP connection?
When do I amend my Firewall Settings NAT Policy to re-direct to new mail server?

I moved my mailbox first and have logged in however send receive fails?

HELP!!
Thanks,
Phil.

Hiya mate,

When you say that you have moved your mailbox - and then send and receive fails - is this for IMAP? or store transfers between to two servers?

Also the following is what I have done in the past:

1. Re-homed RUS
2. Re-Homed RGM
3. Never had to deal with the site replication stuff - but I assume it could move as step 3.
4. Worked on the PF's for replication.

Cheers

A

Hi Andy. Not touched IMAP.

This is for store transfers between 2 servers.

I have now completed all tasks regards article 822931.

Can you confirm that if the old server displays In Sync for replication then replication has completed? The new server shows 'Local Modified'.

Lastly when do I re-route (NAT)? Will exchange still deliver to mailboxes on old server if they have nor been moved?

i.e. NAT policy currently set to forward mail to:
10.0.0.2
New Server 10.0.0.3

If I amend NAT to 10.0.0.3 but mailboxes still exist on old server I presume they will still fing there way to the inbox if the server is still operational?

Going to be a late night!
Phil

Send Receive Error:

Exchange reported error (0x8004010F) The operation failed.
An object could not be found.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Phil.

Hiya Mate in terms of "local modified" does the item count match? - this is the key thing.

Also if you send a message from server a to your mailbox on server b (or vice versa) what does the message tracking say?

In terms of NAT perhaps in this instance I would (and against what I said in the previous post) I would hold fire on changing the RGM and NAT until the last stage (RUS and the like should be fine) - as soon as we are sure that you have an "in sync" PF system and all Exchange Databases have their PF store rehomed to the new server - you an close down the PF's on the old server )e.g. take them offline - but we need to be sure that all mailboxes are using the PF's on the new server.

Let me know about the tracking logs

Cheers

Tracking Database states it is unavailable on the new server?

Regards PF all the ones I have checked marry up OK regards Item Count.

Tired...........
Phil.

Hang in there my man! - I gotcha back! [:D]
Is Message tracking enabled on the new server?
If every item matches up in the PF's and you have re-homed each store to the new server I would take the old PF store offline and see what happens - worst case you have to bring it back online.

Check out the Message Tracking let me know  - then grab some sleep bro all of us in the forums here will be around tomorrow!

How do you enable Message Tracking :)?

Send Receive Error has gone!

Sent test message to my hotmail account but it has yet to arrive!
Thanks,
Phil.

PS: No sleep until happy it is working else I will not sleep for worrying!!

Update: Found the message tracking!

a.grogan -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:15:17 PM)

Ok mate, when you get the chance - post the tracking results and we will have a look.

Cheer mate,

A

Scouser -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:18:46 PM)

Glad your back online, had me worried there!!

Waiting for a mailbox move to complete so I can restart the services as Message Tracking still hasn'y kicked in on the new server.

Thanks, you are a star.....
Phil.

The outbound messages are queued on the Default SMTP Virtual Server?

This is sent via a smart host

Internet Email - cluster3.eu.messageslabs.com

Maybe I have a firewall rule......better check!!
Phil

a.grogan -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:30:46 PM)

Ok mate, if you send a mail between a recipient on server 1 and server 2 does that work ok?

When you send to an external address from server 2 (your new server) does that fail?

Cheers

A

Scouser -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:32:02 PM)

Yep FIREWALL!!

So if I amend the NAT to the new server IP will email still find its way to the old server as not all mailboxes have been moved (THE MD's!!!!).

So we are rocking and rolling! [:D]

Scouser -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:40:11 PM)

Not quite......I want to amend my NAT policy to point to the new server IP.

However I want to be sure email will continue to flow to mailboxes still housed on the old server?

Also there is both the default SMTP Virtual Server + a connector. I changed the local bridgehead on the connector to my new mail server. I trust texchange is using the new SMTP Virtual Server for all?
Thanks,
Phil.

a.grogan -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 4:54:49 PM)

Now you see how easy it is to get me excited!

Ok, you can test this by telneting to the new server and spoofing an external address from the Mail From: command - ensure that the RCPT TO: is an SMTP address on the old server (you might wish to also check an address on the new server as well).

In summary:

Telnet to new server on port 25
Helo <enter>
Mail From:someone@someplace.com <enter>
RCPT To:person@yourplace.com <enter>
Data <enter>
Enter some rubbish <enter>
. (e.g period) <enter>

See if the item is delivered

Scouser -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 5:24:01 PM)

Got a bit lost after the RCPT To!!

Should both sender + receipt address be valid?

Tired brain!!
Thanks,
Phil.

a.grogan -> RE: Migration: Refresh my Memory!! (8.Nov.2007 5:42:55 PM)

Hiya mate, have a look at the following video - the RCPT TO: needs to be someone on your old server - and in a second test someone on your new server - the sender (e.g mail from:) can be anything you like!

(you will need 7-zip to extract the file)

Mailbox move is not going too well:

Mailboxes fell over part way through and now will not move?

A duplicate mailbox was found due to problems during a Move Mailbox procedure. The duplicate mailbox has been deleted. Try again later.

Any ideas?

Starting to panic!!
Phil.
