Hiya all,

I would suggest that we have a look at ISINTEG first - to give you an idea a 20GB database could take around 7 hours under a fair wind. In terms of ESEUTIL / D - I would make sure that ISINTEG has been run first (remember ISINTEG can sometimes take a couple of passes to correct all errors found in a DB) - so looking to defrag your database as well in a single weekend could be ambitious.

Also, we should by rights establish a need for ESEUTIL /D prior to running it - this is done by reviewing the Application Events after the maintenance interval every night to get an idea of how much whitespace is in the DB.

I am being cautious as we are talking about two using two fundamentally dangerous tools here, and we feel that we only have a reason to use one at the moment.

When using these tools I would take a copy of both the TS Logs and DB to disk before beginning.

Cheers

A

ok - i have booked in time this weekend for us to take out the database... we can then create a copy off to the network of the files and then isinteg it.

the command that i want to run is initeg <server> -test forms? and then do initeg <server> -fix if it finds problems.

thanks,
ieuuk

Yes the database and the log files... plus whatever online backup method you use.

For defrag you need 110% free space if you intend to do it on the same LUN as the database.

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-ISINTEG-ESEUTIL.html

Look at the section: "Check the integrity of the Exchange database" half way down the page.

thanks very much for all your help. This afternoon i decided to run a little test and restored our backup to the RSG and ran the tools on that to get some idea of how they work.
doing a isinteg -s <servername> -fix -test alltests and that found about 260,000 errors with the database but after a few go's it got them all and i could remount it.

at the weekend i'll do it to the real one and let you know how it all goes.

thanks again,
ieuuk

Glad we could help and good luck for the weekend.

Just do the backups first and all should be okay.

hi all - have run isinteg on all tests until it showed up no more errors.

have remounted the mailbox store and run an exmerge and am still getting messages in exmerge:

[17:21:06] Copying data from mailbox 'Barry' ('Barry') on Server 'A' to file '\\B\BACKUP\EXCHANGE PST\X.PST'.
[18:28:01] Error copying messages from folder '\Sent Items' (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
[18:28:01] Trying to copy messages in folder '\Sent Items', individually. To avoid duplicates in the target store, messages will be merged and not copied into the target store.
[18:28:28] Error copying message with subject 'Prices' in folder '\Sent Items'. (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)

Do you have any Exchange Level AV software running when you don the exmerge... try disabling the exchange level av and any file level av before starting Exmerge.

If all else fails try making another Mail Store and than Migrating the users across to this store.

It will create a fresh database.

How about try a lil test to check if database is corrupted / mailbox / OL profile.

Go to the sent items of the user - Barry copy the item Prices in a PST else remove the entire sent items and then check to see mailbox moves.

Reason why im asking you to do this, cause if the experiment works...we now know that issue is within mailboxes and not database completely so running defrag / isinteg would be sheer waste of time.

IsInteg can repair logical corruptions something like a broken pointer / link within the database. However if u have a mailbox level corruption you cant do much rather than trying to use ExMerge or manual export of data into PST.

Hope this helps.

hey - thanks for the response.

I've been having a dig around and the messages that exmerge errors on appear to be in the users pst file anyway.

the messages can be opened an exported out of outlook when you have the users mailbox open too.

i dont know if these exmerge errors are just random but there is definatly a few mailboxes which have loads of errors.

I am happy that export of info into PST has helped.
ExMerge is a tool that cant leave out info and export everything rest apart from corruption (again if you want to specify complete export of info). And that is why i would never touch the database ever until i am completely convinced that the database is the culprit - cause every1 would agree that running the maintenance against database means getting the store down (something which the boss's wont like ever :)
