I am the "lone Admin" here and I have a simple question.

I have ONE existing Exchange 2003 server on my network (one domain/one forest).  It handles ALL the email.  Can I install Exchange 2007 into this environment and still have the old Exchange 2003 server "serve" the email until I am ready to transition to Exchange 2007?

I'm afraid that if I install Exchange 2007 that it will be an "all or nothing" proposition.  I would prefer to install 2007 and configure it over time to take on all the roles.

Thanks!

Hiya, I am guessing that you have additional hardware for the new Exchange 2007 servers?
If this is the case installing Exchange 2007 into your Existing environment should not cause you any issues (it is called interoperability mode). There are a few caveats, but we would need to know a little more detail - for example do you plan on using CCR clustering?

Cheers

A

I have one server on my DMZ that I'm planning to use for the Edge role and a new server on the LAN that I'll install Exch 2007 on (and the remaining roles).  No clustering will be necessary.

So to clarify...one server (separate hardware-old server) will still have Exch 2003 and the new server (separate hardware) will run Exch 2007.

Hiya then you should have too many problems. I have compiled some articles here:
http://telnetport25.wordpress.com/2007/11/21/tips-on-installing-exchange-2007-in-to-an-existing-exchange-organisation-part-1/

and here:

http://telnetport25.wordpress.com/2007/12/05/tips-on-installing-exchange-2007-in-to-an-existing-exchange-organisation-part-2/

That can give you a basic overview of what to expect during the setup and the like.
One other thing to be aware of is:

If you make use of OWA via either an internal DNS namespace of the outside world it is better the CAS role on the Exchange server handle requests to it (so for example if people currently use your old Exchange servers DNS address /exchange - it is better to switch that to the CAS when it is installed so it can redirect OWA traffic between the two servers.

Cheers

Just a clarification...

Will the act of installing exchange 2007 STOP mail flow?  In other words will my Exchange 2003 box still work?

Hiya mate, no it shouldn't all it should do is establish a new Admin Group and new Routing Group so mail can flow between the Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 servers.
