wesvan -> using ISP mail server as a backup to Exchange (5.Dec.2007 4:23:24 PM)

I'm not sure if this is even worth setting up or not, but here is the scenario. I have set up a new Exchange 2007 server connected to a static IP. I have made the appropriate name server changes and it seems like everything is working fine. I can send and receive emails through it without errors. The ISP I am using has an email server that I can set up POP accounts on. In fact, this is the server all our employees have their accounts on currently. What I would like to do is route all mail through the Exchange server instead of using the POP accounts, however, I would like to entertain the though of having the ISP mail server queue my emails incase the exchange server looses its connection to the Internet. My DNS configuration has been set up with two MX records which are in the order of Exchange first, and the ISP mail server second. I have tested the system to see what happens if the exchange server goes off line, and the ISP mail server does in fact collect the email intended for a user into its queue. I am able to set up a POP connection in Outlook to “get” email from the ISP mail account, however, I would like to set things up so the ISP mail server simply “holds” onto the mail until the Exchange server is running again, then have Exchange “pull” the email in, and route it to the appropriate email address from within the Exchange server. Is something like that feasible? If so, where do I start? Thanks in advance for any help on this subject.

This is possible...but why uses POP3...its messy.

Why not get your ISP to provide a Backup SMTP server and set the first mx to your exchange server and the 2nd mx to this smtp server. Than your ISP can foward the mail onto you when your Exchange 2007 comes up.

Rishi,

Thanks! I will look into this. I sounds like a much better solution.

If you cannot get your ISP to do this than check on the Interhet for Backup SMTP and they seem to start at around the US$50 per domain per year ball park figure.

rishishah is right.  A few simple changes to DNS on your ISP's end should do the trick if everything is setup properly.

We do the same thing for many clients and actually just moved about 50 users from a postfix system to Exchange 2007, which sounds very similar to what you did.  The migration step was flawless.
