Hello!
Exchange 2003, 2007 client -->sending to--> Exchange 2007, 2007 client.

Sporadically, we get NDRs from Exchange saying that:
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
Final-Recipient: rfc822;mail@domain.com
Action: delayed
Status: 4.4.7
Will-Retry-Until: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 15:07:22 -0800
X-Display-Name: mail@domain.com

The frustrating part is that it eventually doesn't deliver and we have to send the messages again but won't know until a few days later. Is there a way to look for more detailed errors? MS says that it's most likely an issue with the receiving server (4.4.7 error). ESM says that it starts outbound transfer of message and then transfers to mail.recipientdomain.com through SMTP.

Please provide insight, much appreciated!

In these cases I always go to my standard troubleshooting techniques.

Use the Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant (ExTRA) from Microsoft
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/bb288488.aspx

Look through your SMTP log to look for additional information

Try manually creating an entire message stream from your Exchange server to the recipient system using a telnet session over TCP port 25.

Chances are you'll see something that will point you in the right direction.

Hi uemurad,
Trying to spend more time troubleshooting this.

Where did you install your ExTRA.msi? Does it have to be on one of the exchange servers or a member server is OK? I have messages tracking enabled on just one of the boxes, on the internet facing one.

Any advice appreciated.

I normally install ExTRA on my workstation.

How many boxes do you have?  What are their roles?  Typically I enable it on all mailbox servers because most of the information I use involves the mailboxes.

Hello, thanks for the reply.
2 exchange boxes:
EX1: dc/gc, no tracking.
EX2: bridgehead, tracking enabled.

EX1 has the sender mailbox so I enter that in the Enter Server and User Information window in the Troubleshooting Assitant tool. The issue is delayed delivery to another domain so I would think EX1 doesn't need tracking as it just uses the SMTP connector to EX2 to forward outgoing mail.
So when I enter in the above details, Basic Server Inforamation populates with several lines. I click Next to locate the submitted message and it complains that there's no message from the specified sender, possibly de to the fact that EX1 doesn't have tracking enabled.

In ESM, I can find the message no problem using the tracking tool pointing to EX2. It says that Message transferred to mail.domain.com through SMTP so it makes it out. . .just lots of delays. Other messages can reach there fine. The queue will at most tell me that it's in the retry state, that's all.

Thank you

Look at your SMTP logs to see what is happening with the transmission to the recipient system.  You can also try manually connecting to the recipient system via a telnet session on TCP 25.  Generate a complete message and note any non-OK responses from their server.

I checked my SMTP logging. It's enabled in W3C format but in the Advanced tab, nothing is checked. What is the necessary items that needs to be checked so as to not overload the files? Currently, the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 shows log files that have mainly POLL, SEARCH, GET, PROPFIND...

If that's the log from the transmission to the problem domain, it didn't have an issue that time.  Can you find the transmission log for a message you know didn't go through?

You are showing enough information now.  You can see the HELO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, and DATA commands.  You got OK responses at each step and the recipient system says the message is queued for delivery.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, everything from the 220 line and on is from my telnet session to the recipient org. The ex log doesn't have the HELO DATA lines so, I think I'll go and check things like cs-username, cs-method, sc-status, etc. Checking everything in the extended logging options seems overkill. Will post any udpates for any problem emails as soon as I get them.

On my server I log the following:

Date, Time, c-ip, cs-username, s-sitename, s-computername, s-ip, cs-method, cs-uri-stem, cs-uri-query, sc-status, sc-bytes, cs-bytes, time-taken, cs-version

Hi uemurad,
Any idea why the smtp log folder doesn't show up in my C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles directory?

-The general tab of the logging properties window shows the Log file directory being:
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\smtp AND the log file name: SmtpSvc1\exyymmddhh.log

-The only thing I see in LogFiles are Cluster, HTTPERR, Shutdown, W3SVC1, and W3SVC#########

-Tried explicitly going to ..\LogFiles\smtp but nothing there.

Any ideas on this one? Much Thanks!

Sorry, but I have to ask.  The "Enable logging" box is checked, right?
You've got disk space available?
I'd probably just use Windows Explorer to search all the local drives for *.LOG files.

OK, this is embarrassing. I was on the wrong box :(. I can see how having it enabled on both boxes would help figure it out...or I should've caught this earlier anyway.
I do all my administration on the dc/gc, not the bridgehead. Much appreciative of the time you spent to help me figure this out. I'll find a way to give you props!

Now to wait for an instance of a delayed message. Previous logs didn't have sufficient info for a good analysis...

Know that we've all done something equally embarrassing in our careers - don't give that a second thought.

When you run across a situation needing assistance, you know where to come!

OK, we have live data:
Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified.  Please retry or contact your administrator.
            <my.domain.com #4.4.7>

Taken from the SMTP log (see link):

It looks like everything is OK, with the HELO and QUITs...This is the same account that's been having the issues earlier. Other accounts in the same domain are hit and miss as well. Again, we go through messagelabs, but since 1 out of 2 go through to the problem recipient, we (and the sender) shouldn't be on the black list for theirdomain.com.

I'd expect to see MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, and DATA lines in the log.

I'd manually attempt to send an equivalent message to that domain (same sender and recipient, same subject line) via a telnet session to see if any additional information can be ascertained.
