Make sure your connector is set to listen on ALL IP ADDRESS. Can you telnet each NLB Node on port 25? Can you connect to POP3 or IMAP ports using your NLB IP or DNS Name? Did you follow all instructions on Henriks' NLB article?

Can you telnet both HT Server on port 25? Can you telnet NLB IP / DNS Name on porta 25? Have you added NLB IP to the list of IP Address in your NIC Card? Have your Receive Connector been configured to listen on All IP Address? Can you connect to NLB using POP3/IMAP? Have you followed Henrik's NLB article entirely?

With that I mean messages sent between Hub Transport servers in the organization. They must use the built.in resilience. The scenarios where you would use NLB is when a LOB application or SharePoint server etc. needs to submit messages to the Exchange organization.

Yes that's correct but try changing the NLB to multicast instead.

Have your Receive Connector been configured to listen on All IP Address? Can you connect to NLB using POP3/IMAP? Have you followed Henrik's NLB article entirely? I can telnet to each HT server on 25. I cannot telnet the NLB address on 25. Each server has 2 NICs, one designated 'Public' and the other designated 'NLB'. The NLB NIC has the cluster IP address added to it, but the 'Public' NIC does not. The Receive Connectors were not configured to listen on all IP address (I just changed this). I do not have POP3/IMAP enabled on the server at all, so I have not tested this. To my knowledge and recolloection, I followed Henrik's NLB article as closely as I could. I have the NLB CAS and not-NLB HT setup working perfectly. I'll try adding the cluster IP to the 'Public' NIC next. EDIT 2 - When I tried to do this, Windows gave me a warning because the IP was already configured on the 'NLB' NIC. I'll refrain from adding the IP until I get more direction here. Thanks again for the help. Ray G. EDIT - By the way, I also did change my NLB cluster from Unicast to Multicast as per Henrik's suggestion.

Henrik, Could you please tell me why Multicast is better than Unicast in this case? How could I configure NLB to process intra-org HT communication since there is no interface to configure it? (in reply to the other post) Rodrigo

Remove NLB from your servers and configure it again using NLB Manager. Follow the wizard, which is very simple. You Must not add cluster IP to Public Nic, since that ip is already bind to NLB Nic.

Good news! I'm not sure what exactly it was, but now it's suddenly working for me. I manually replicated the AD database throughout our organization after making the changes recommended here earlier this morning (changing NLB cluster to multicast and tweaking the receive connector permissions) and it didn't work for me then. But this afternoon I happened to run my routine that tries to send a message via SMTP through the NLB address and it went through! So thanks for your help guys! This has been a really annoying holdup for me, and now (once all our devices are switched over to the NLB IP) I'll finally be able to decommission our old Exchange 2000 install. I'll still look forward to your article, Henrik, to make sure that I have everything configured optimally. Thanks again! Ray G.

Well since it's not supported to use NLB for communication between HT servers in the org, you shouldn't even try to do so... In my particular lab multicast worked without a glitch, but I had a few issues with unicast. But unicast should work as well, I just haven't had the time to test this extensively yet.

Henrik, I wanted to let you know, just to test it out I switched the NLB back from Multicast to Unicast, and it's still successfully load balancing port 25. I've actually rolled back a lot of the changes I made recently to try and verify the exact point where it started, but I can't figure it out. Very strange (but at least it's still working!) Ray

Hi Ray, Yep it's also working with both unicast and multicast in my lab. The article will be written with unicast in mind.
