Yup, outside my network. I telnetted back in, did USER user and got +OK. but when I tried USER password I get '-ERR Command is not valid in this state.'

You have to type it like this. For user: "JSmith" with a  password of "football"

Telnet mail.myserver.com 110

USER JSmith

PASS football

Sorry i typed user twice before.

on password, I get '-ERR Protocol error.'

not sure what changed but now I'm getting -ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Right.  I needed to sleep on this one.

Now im fresh and ready to go! :P

Lets try this from within the network.  telnet to the server from INSIDE the network and try the

User userid

pass password

and let me know what it says.

Can you tell me what firewall you are using?

Ive also sent you a PM.

I get the same thing, bad user name or password from inside the network. I just don't get it

I guess we could try re installing the pop3 services.

But im not sure thats the next recommendation i want to make.  Its a little drastic and im not even sure if it will fix it.

If you did want to do this you could by going to add/remove programs

then Windows componants

Then look for Email Services then pop3.

In the mean time i will keep my thinking hat on.

Sorry to have taken so long... yes, I'm not really happy with it, but I didn finally get it to work. Had to use (for login) domain\mailbox_name\alias_name. I'd really much rather just use user name for login, but I guess it can't work that way.
