isdept -> move from 5.5 to 2003 or 2007 (8.Jan.2008 2:01:42 PM)

i am currently running exchange 5.5 in an NT domain with no active directory.  I have approximately 50 email users so migration is not a big problem.  i will be buying new hardware and will probably re-create all users rather than migrate them.  My question at this point is "should I move directly to Exchange 2007 or should I go to exchange 2003?"  How painful is it goingto be to move directly to Exchg 2007?  any thought and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

There is no direct path for migration from 5.5 to 2K7. A very simple way would be to migrate user account using ADMT. Export the users mailboxes to PST file (If there are not many of them). Create blank mailboxes on 2K7 server and Import PSTs on brand new 2K7 server. You would have to remove exchange attributes for migrated user account and create new mailboxes for them on 2K7 server.

hey paresh, I plan on doing a PST migration from 5.5 to 2007

The users are already created in 2003 AD, I plan to exmerge PSTs from 5.5 then create blank user mailboxes for 2k7 and import them. Keeping the server name the same, the clients should keep on running along.

you mention "remove exchange attributes for migrated user account", what are you referring to here and how can I remove these attribs?

IF using a NT4 domain then ignore the Exchange attributes thing as NT4 domains do not store such information.
You will need to set up an Active Directory domain controller, so you will also need to migrate from NT4 domain to an AD domain to use Exchange 2007.
