Hi everyone,

We've recently migrated over to a single-server Exchange 2007 deployment for our office. Everything's been running fine except for random users randomly getting their internal mail returned. It doesn't always happen, but does happen frequently.

The return is: (bold face = sanitized)

'User Name'
The recipient's e-mail address was not found in the recipient's e-mail system. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please check the e-mail address and try resending this message, or provide the following diagnostic text to your system administrator.

Diagnostic information for administrators:

Generating server: IPDMHB0002MIA.agencynet.com
imceaex-_o=domainname_ou=first+20administrative+20group_cn=recipients_cn=user@domain.com
#550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

I've checked the OAB and everything seems to be fine. Each user has their correct SMTP address in our domain, so I'm confused why this automatic AD routing is taking place.

It only happens when internal users send mail to other internal users. It happens regardless of a distribution or individual users.

We've cleared out users autocomplete countless times and had them re-sync the address book.

It mainly occurs to Outlook 2003 users but has also happened to 2007 users.

I'm just lost, any idea why this random problem comes up? I can't tell you how much I dislike getting users sending me messages first thing in the morning about bounced e-mails for internal users, heh.

TIA!

Did you migrate using PST imports?

We exported each mailbox individually, created a new profile for the new server and then imported, so yes. We did not use exmerge however because the two servers were not connected via AD.

However, these problems were not existent on the previous server, unless that doesn't matter.

OK.
So you did a PST migration.
I have seen this when doing a PST migration.

Can I assume that the issue only surfaces when replying to existing email?  (email that came into the system from the PST?)

That's the strange thing though, some were replies from e-mails that existed before the migration, some were post migration.

However, it could be that the reply from a previous e-mail created the faulty autocomplete.

Is there any way to retroactively fix these bad addresses? If not, this is going to plague us for a long, long time...

What is happening here is that the email is referencing the old server.  Can't be found - big surprise.

I am unaware of any method to mass change this.

The only thing I know works is to erase the TO: and CC:  and BCC: contents and rediscover/re-enter them.

Killing the outlook nlk files may help also.

We've killed that file time and time again. As soon as someone replies to an old address, it's killed.

Hi,

I have the same issue with a client I upgradad from Exch 2003 to 2007 and imported all emails using PSTs.

They're also getting NDRs for emails sent to internal users. I deleted the old addresses in the autocomplete (NK2 file) for all users, but they're still gettng occassional bounce backs for internal emails. Like you folks, I suspect it's because they've replied to old emails which is causing the bounce back and may have created the wrong autocomplete entry again as well.

I'm speaking to Microsoft to see what they have to say about this and will post the results here. Meanwhile, if anybody has any ideas on this one or has had any luck, could you post please? It'll be very helpful.

Thanks.

Thanks Mo!

This looks like it'd work. I wonder if I can use an e-mail policy in 2007 to apply these automatically to all our users instead of handling it singly. Any ideas?
