Hello I have 2 exchange servers exchange01 and exchange02. I am in the process of decommissioning exhange01. I have moved mailboxes, system/public folders, offline address book, RUS and created an additional Internet Mail SMTP connector for exchange02 in order for outbound routing to use this connector, however exchange is still routing outbound mail through old connector. Is there any way to tell exchange to use the new SMTP connector and verify it in Message Tracking Center

Do you have any smarthost settings in the Default SMTP Virtual Server on exchange01? And which server have you specified as your Bridgehead on your new connector?

Yes I have my "smarthost2" as smarthost settings defined in Default SMTP on exchange01. And I have mentioned exchange02 as local bridgehead server in the new SMTP connector.

The only issue I am having is mail is being routed through SMTP on exchange01 not exchange02, even though there is no SMTP connector defined for exchange01. Also when I shutdown exchange01, mail gets queued at I get critical: queue growth in Monitoring and Status

First - ensure that there are no smart hosts configured on the SMTP virtual server of either machine. That is most important. Next - I don't think that your understanding of SMTP connectors is correct. SMTP connectors are not server specific, they are an Org setting. Therefore rather than create a new connector what you should have done is added the new server as a server under bridgeheads and then removed the old server. Email should then flow through to the smart host using the new server. Simon.

At point outbound mail is directly going to smarthost, skipping the exchange02. Also I cannot track any messages on exchange02. I do have message tracking enabled and permissions are defined as well for the log

yes the new server exchange02 is listed as the only bridgehead server in SMTP connector. Also I now have another issue of message tracking center skipping the new server (exchange02) to track messages. It defaults to exchange01, which was not the case earlier. The only thing done was installation of veritas backup exec agent.

Message tracking will default to one specific server if you don't specify a server. The fact that it is defaulting to the other server is not a problem in itself. Have you changed the routing master in the Routing group? Have you tried recreating the SMTP connector? Simon.

i do specify the server exchange02, but it defaults it to exchange01. Yes I changed the routing group master from exchange01 to exchange02. And i did recreate an additional SMTP connector for exchange02

I have never seen Message Tracking change the server to another one on its own before. Are message tracking logs being generated? What happens if you shutdown the old server? Something isn't right here at all. Have you tried to do anything to get the old name to point to the new name? DNS changes for example? Simon.

no dns changes. if i shutdown the old exchange01, outbound routing doesnt work (meaning i cant send email out to yahoo neither can i receive email from yahoo). logs are being generated fine and messages are being tracked in logs

In that case I would be looking to remove all SMTP connectors, and ensuring that the SMTP server settings are default on both servers. Then restarting all Exchange services on both servers and recreating the SMTP connector. The fact that you are referencing Internet Mail Connector means the site has probably come across from Exchange 5.5, as IMC is what it was called in that version. Simon.

I have no idea on the message tracking issue. I have never seen Exchange do that before (and I have seen Exchange do some odd things). Simon.

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this or not if not please feel free to move the post mods. I am in the process of changing domains due to a company sale. I would like to get the mail for the new domain to be forwarded through the old exchange server so that we may be able to use our new e-mail addresses. There is a sensitivity issue due to business competition long story and not really relevant. I have a new exchange server set up for the new company domain (xyz.com) as well as e-mail addresses for all users in this domain. What I want to do is allow my users to use their new e-mail addresses for their customers and business contacts but until I have the public IP addresses from the current domain (abc.com) registered to us I am unable to do this. I have talked with the exchange admin for the abc.com domain and have been told that this is possible but being new to Exchange I am unsure how to configure my server to forward all e-mail for the username@xyz.com domain to the user@abc.com in order for us to receive the e-mail sent to our new addresses. Anybody have any ideas?

In Active Directory right click user->properties->exchange general->delivery options->forwarding address

Thanks but I don't want to have to touch every AD account in order to make this work. There must be a way to configure it for the entire organiztion within the System Manager.

I am using Exchange2003 and thats the only way out unless you are using Exchange 2007

Baloo, First, you need to arrange for something to receive mail sent to xyz.com. That is done using DNS MX records, and if Exchange is the receiving server, you need to configure it to accept mail for xyz.com. Now, if the same user objects are going to accept mail for both the old and new domains, you configure this using a Recipient Policy to stamp the objects with the desired SMTP address format (as an alias). You can also use the Recipient Policy to make xyz.com the reply address.
