Hello,

I was wondering about any of your thoughts about placing an Edge server role in front of a Symantec Mail Security Appliance. Since there is an EdgeSync agreement with the AD site and there is a default send connector between the HUB and Edge would there be a problem with having a device in between the two? Or does it have to be HUB directory to Edge with nothing in the middle?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with that device, but I'm assuming it will handle Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, and SMTP relaying duties.  Thus, my question would be why bother with the Edge at all?  The Edge role leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion.  I know others here share the same opinion.

If you really want to do a multi-tiered approach, you can install the anti-spam agents on the Hub Transport server as well.  But I'm betting that Symantec appliance will be more than adequate.

i tend to agree.

just use the appliance as the relay for outbound and smtp gateway inbound.

keep it simple thats the key

why pay for a new hardware and os license etc..if you dont have to.

if you already got the new hardware for the edge server use it as a mailbox server instead and setup the failover options instead. nice ROI on it then.
