I work for a small company so we don't have a dedicated IT dept.  I was recently given the task of migrating to Exchange 2007 from 2003.  I installed 2007 on a new server, moved the mailboxes to 2007.  I removed the connectors (linking the 2003 box with the 2007 box).  I then thought that I successfully removed the Recipient Update Service but I believe this is the step that is causing me my problems.

So the exchange 2003 server was uninstalled, now when clients do a send and receive in Outlook we get an error Exchange reported an error (0x8004010F) the operating failed.  An object cannot be found.

I've searched online to no avail.  Can someone please offer me some insight as to how to resolve my issue?  I wouldn't mine backing up the mailboxes, removing exchange completely from the domain, and starting fresh with 2007 if that is possible.

You didn't follow the instructions about replicating the system folders. That error means cannot find and usually means that the Offline Address Books were not replicated across, or you didn't wait long enough.

Did you follow the Microsoft guide for removing the legacy Exchange servers?

I have encounter this before and you will have to run adsiedit.msc and remove anything that has reference to the old exchange server.

Pain in the butt but also, you will have to create new outlook profiles for the users. I have noticed that the old outlook profile still holds the info of the exchange server that is no longer there.

This problem means either Address list object is missied or the offline address book has no address list.
Antway this article may help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905813

thanks for your replies.  I saw that article about the offline address book before I posted, I don't believe that is the issue.

I followed the Exchange 2007 fix on that page and when I browse to an appropriate offline affress book, I only see one in the list, which is the one that is linked.

This is something I have noticed:  I never moved any public folders that were created, so possibly Exchange 2007 has some pointers to the only exchange server hosting the public folders?  If I unmount the public folder database, which is under storage group 2, I no longer get object not found, I now get (0x8004011D) Server is not available.

I opened adsiedit.msc and browsed around a bit to see if something stood out and obviously pointing to the old exchange box.  I didn't see anything obvious.

If you didn't move any public folders then that means you didn't move any system folders. That means you haven't completed the migration correctly.
A migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 is not just moving the mailboxes. You have to replicated public and system folders. System folders are stored in the public folder store and are present on every Exchange 2003 server.

When you removed the Exchange 2003 server you should have followed this article or similar: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905.aspx

Alright, but since I didn't do that, how can I go about fixing the problem?  Now that Exchange is 2003 is gone, what steps do I need to take?

Do you have a public folder store on the new server? If not then you will need to create one. You should also look at the OAB settings to ensure that they are supporting the older versions of Outlook.
