I am trying to install Exchange 2007 into an existing Exchange 2003 organization. I was able to get Ex07 installed with the I was having trouble getting the Hub Transport role working, so I tried to unistall that role from Mailbox Role, Client Access Role and Hub Transport role. The Hub Trasport service never would start, so I tried to unistall the Hub Transport role which failed. I was able to successfully unistall the Client Access Role, but I cannot do anything further. I cannot readd the Client Access Role because it states the following error: Summary: 1 item(s). 0 succeeded, 1 failed. Elapsed time: 00:00:07 Client Access Role Prerequisites Failed Error: A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the HubTransport role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel. Error: A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the Mailbox role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel. Elapsed Time: 00:00:07 I am considering reloaded the OS with the same name, manually removing the Exchange files and reloading Ex07. Will this cause other issues? Is there anything else I might do to resolve this issue. Thanks for any advice you might give. Steve

Does the server appear in ESM? If it does then you will have to go through a disaster recovery installation on the replacement server to remove the installation correctly. There are no manual removal instructions and Exchange and the domain will expect it to be there. Therefore if you replace the server/OS then you will have give it the same name, then do a disaster recovery installation of Exchange. Once done, remove Exchange correctly using add/remove programs. Simon.

Simon, Thanks for the tip. I was able to reinstall the OS and install Exchange 2007 in disaster recovery mode. I do not want to unistall Exchange 2007 from the hardware. This is going to be my new Exchange server when I migrate my users from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. Now I am getting a looping issue between the two servers. I have disabled the network adapter on the Ex07 server until I find how to modify the settings so email will flow through the Ex03 server from Ex07. Below is the NDR I am getting: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: TOPIC Sent: 2/29/2008 1:09 PM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX on 2/29/2008 1:10 PM A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your administrator. <server.mydomain.com#5.3.5> Here is the Event log entry for the Ex03 server: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: NDR Event ID: 3017 Date: 02/29/2008 Time: 1:43:04 PM User: N/A Computer: Server Description: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for recipient rfc822;recipient@somedomain.com (Message-ID FA06AB0346BF004B876461719D4E7567301068@server.mydomain.com). Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. Solution: Check the configuration of the virtual serverÆs connectors for loops and ensure each virtual server is defined by a unique incoming port. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: cf 02 04 c0 Ï..À My question is how do you configure the Ex07 server to forward email to the Ex03 server. Thanks. Steve

What do you mean by "configure the Ex07 server to forward email to the Ex03 server." ? If you want to deliver email to the internet via Exchange 2003 then create an SMTP connector on the Exchange 2003 server and ensure that the Exchange 2003 server is the only server listed as a bridgehead and the scope is set to entire org. Do ensure that there are no smart hosts configured on the SMTP virtual server of the Exchange server. If you have created a send connector on the Exchange 2007 server then remove it. Simon.
