RedGuru -> Console on Exchange Server 2007 is reacting very slow (4.Mar.2008 3:38:19 PM)

Hello,

I have a big problem. Our new Exchange 2007 server is working well for the users and we have only about 35 G database storage in use. The processor is at 1% usage most of the time, sometimes up to 20%. We use Scanmail for Exchange also on the server.
If I want to work on the management console on the server it reacts really slow.
Does anybody know what can cause this problem? Itīs a Windows 2003 Server x64 with 4 Gb Memory and 900.000+k still available. PF is between 4 and 6 GB. Problem appears since 29th of February. On this day the server restarted itself after 20 Minutes of no reaction. We executed as recommended by Microsoft because of the error report the command Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED. And since this time working on the remote console is not funny.

Has anybody a suggestion?
Thanks for your help.

We have the same problem and suspect that this is by design. It seems that the preferred tool as far as MFST is concerned is the Powershell. It provides a powerful CLI

The management console is slow. No idea why.
Doesn't matter how much resources are on the machine, it is still slow.
I don't think it is by design, as Powershell is slow as well. I just think it is poor design.

If you want a responsive management console install the bits on to a Windows XP machine. It doesn't have to be much - 256 mb will be fine. On a couple of sites I have actually built a Windows XP machine in a virtual machine and then use VMWARE player on the Exchange server to store it. Enable remote desktop and use it that way. Performance is fine on Windows XP.

Makes me wonder if MMC 3 was developed on Windows XP...

I agree... installing the EMC onto another Server or even Win XP seems to work a lot better than starting it on the Exchange Server itsself.

I am a little wondering: I found out that if I use RDP connection from a Terminalserver with 1 GBit LAN connection it works much faster than from a desktop with 100MBit LAN.
I will also try to install MMC on another PC.

Last I looked, those didn't install on Vista, has that changed yet?

Exchange 2007 SP1 management tools are supported on Vista.

Cool, thanks Simon.

I also experienced slow Exchange Management Console on Exchange 2007 servers.

Two ways I have found of solving this are to:

1) Change the number of recipients displayed under recipient configuration,
2) In IE select tools, internet options, Clcik the advanced tab and uncheck 'Check for publisher's certificate revocation'

Hope that helps
