In 2007 we retained a customer with an existing SBS 2003
server and 3 other site DC's, and they wanted to begin hosting Exchange on a standalone box sicne they have 75+ users. Now we understand that SBS cannot have any additional DC's so that's already an issue. Now going back to another customer in 2007 with a standalone SBS 2003 box, when we tried adding a standalone Exchange 2007 box, it noticed existing Exchange AD attributes within the network, and the install stopped immediately. All our
research pointed to manually removing those attributes, or rebuilding the domain from scratch. Since we couldn't find any supporting documentation to remove all the Exchange/AD-related attributes, we resorted to rebuilding the AD
network (What a pain!).

With our latest problem, do we need to rebuild the network again, or is there a way around it?

Your information is old. You can have another DC in your SBS forest. You can have a Exchange 2007 server in your 2003 SBS forest as well. It has to be a DC though and the FSMO roles need to stay on the SBS box.
