Hi All, When installing Outlook 2007 - do I need to first add the server to the domain then install Exchange? Or, do I just install Exchange?

hi mate, First your exchange server should be part of Domain (Member Server) It should have good communication with AD - DC & GC. DNS should work fine Then you install Exchange 2007 then you configure your outlook 2007 on a client machine

Thanks for the feedback, but here is where I am so far: When installing Exchange I get the following errors under the Readiness Checks and I think I found help as what I need to do. Errors: Summary: 4 item(s). 4 succeeded, 0 failed. Elapsed time: 00:00:43 Organization Prerequisites Completed Elapsed Time: 00:00:02 Hub Transport Role Prerequisites Completed Warning: Setup cannot detect an SMTP or Send connector with an address space of '*'. Mail flow to the Internet may not work properly. Warning: Setup cannot verify that the 'Host' (A) record for this computer exists within the DNS database on server 192.168.1.210. Elapsed Time: 00:00:02 Client Access Role Prerequisites Completed Warning: Setup cannot verify that the 'Host' (A) record for this computer exists within the DNS database on server 192.168.1.210. Elapsed Time: 00:00:02 Mailbox Role Prerequisites Completed Warning: Setup cannot verify that the 'Host' (A) record for this computer exists within the DNS database on server 192.168.1.210. Elapsed Time: 00:00:02 I found this as to the possible solution for the SMTP or Send Connector Error, but it appears that I can only do it if I have Exchange already installed and am not sure what other of the methods listed I should do. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998814(EXCHG.80).aspx I'm assuming that the DNS error is happening because my Exchange server is not listed in DNS which in on a different server, but in the same domain? If so, do I need to add the record manually in DNS under Forward Lookup Zones? Shouldn't the entry have been done when I added the Exchange server to the domain? Finally, I do have the option to still install, but am worried that I may screw things up. My DC is a W2K3 with all the latest updates and running also as a DNS server. My Exchange Server is a W23k3 x64 with Exchange 2007 SP1 trying to be installed on it. I appreciate any help.

The SMTP connector warning is fine. It's just saying that it doesn't find another server with a Send Connector to the internet. Once Exchange is installed, all you'll have to do is create a Send Connector to * which will allow it to route to the internet. As for the DNS error, for Exchange to have been joined to the domain, you had to have had the DNS IP set to a DC. Have you modified the DNS IP Settings since you joined it to the domain? Also, if you go into your NIC properties, have you disabled that NIC from registering in DNS? You can follow this guide to ensure that NIC is set to dynamically register in DNS. You can of course just create a static DNS entry and be done with it. If you do create a static entry and leave the NIC set to dynamically register, you will probably see a warning in the event log saying it's trying to register its' A record but can't due to it not being the owner of the record. You can ignore that. Follow this guide on how to check if the NIC is set to dynamically register the record: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/tcpipdns.mspx It's for XP but the same procedure applies to Server 2003. You can ignore most of it and look at the second screenshot. Make sure, "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" is selected. Also, make sure the DNS IPs are pointed to the DC servers that are also DNS servers.

Hi Elan, Thank you very much for your response. I will skip the SMTP warning then and address it after I install Exchange. As for the DNS error - I assigned the DNS IP address to the internal settings on the NIC before I joined it to the domain. The NIC is set to register in DNS. I guess I should just add it? Do I add it as an A record though? I see under Forward Lookup Zones that I have a _msdcs.studio.local and a studio.local. I'm not the best at DNS.

_msdcs.studio.local zone is just for forest information. This zone gets replicated forest wide so every domain knows about every DC, all the site information, etc... You'll want to put it in your studio.local zone. You should really troubleshoot why your server isn't registering dynamically in DNS

Hi All, Here's what I have so far. I manually added the Exchange server to DNS becuase I just couldn't figure out what it was manually registering in DNS. Funny thing though, I ran the setup again this morning and all my errors are gone. The error I was getting of "Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of AD..." no longer shows up. The error I was getting of "The server not finding a GC server" is alos gone. Could it be that it took time for the servers to all sychronize? Just thought I'd throw this out incase anyone else has had this issue.
