Missing Exchange Tabs in AD - 14.May2008 9:31:20 AM

Hello,

I did the setup of Exchange 2003 over a Windows 2003 server; the server was added to the domain before to do this all no error were found. The exchange and the DC are NOT the same server.

So, I went thru the setup (all steps were made only on the exchange server, nothing was made on the DC directly).

The setup went fine and finished successfully. I have restarted the exchange server, and I have no error in logs.

In my AD, I don't see any additional tabs for now and I can't really restart the DC right now. Is there something I must do afterwards to get those tabs ?

Thank you for your help !

The Exchange tabs are only viewable on systems that have the Exchange System Tools installed.  You didn't mention where you were viewing AD (assuming you are talking about Active Directory Users & Computers).

Right, I am trying to see those tabs, on my DC server, which is also the AD server.

When I pick a user and check the tabs, I see nothing relating to Exchange 2003. Do I have to install something on my DC/AD server ? If yes, what ?

Again, thanks in advance.

As I mentioned before, you have to have the Exchange System Tools installed on any computer you are attempting to see the Exchange tabs within ADUC.

You may want to rethink having that ability on your DC, as the System Tools requires IIS to be installed as a prerequisite.  For that very reason I do not have the System Tools installed on any of my DCs.

You can install ADUC and the System Tools on a workstation, or run ADUC on your Exchange server.

Sure, I got this.

But, in the Active Directory, I should anyway have 2-3 tabs for where I will be able to define what are the email address, which is the main (out of the Exchange administration itself).

I mean where I link AD accounts to Exchange. I am not supposed to have those 2-3 tabs ?

Such as -> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa996230.ee543be5-2a58-4dce-a06d-e53db6147e28(en-us,EXCHG.65).gif

Do I have to restart the AD/DC to get this, or install something else ?

Thanks !

I am maybe going to be obvious with this question, but I am not sure.

Let’s admit I have :

- Tom which acts as DC / AD / DNS / DHCP / FILESERVER
- Jerry which acts as Exchange

I put my CD of Exchange into Jerry and does :

- Join the domain which Tom leads, reboot
- Log as DOMAIN Administrator
- Setup IIS, ASP.net, SMTP & NNTP
- Install Windows Server Support Tools
- Start Exchange deployment
- Meet first needs
- Run “dcdiag /s:TOM /f:dcdiag.txt”
- Run “netdiag /l”
- Run Forestprep
- Setup Exchange
- Reboot Exchange

So if this is right, so far, I had nothing to do DIRECTLY on Tom. Logs show no error so far, but going to the Tom server, in the AD and opening an user account won’t show http://www.christensen-software.com/images/nu008.gif this tab.

Why ? What do I miss ?

It's because the ADUC that comes with Windows Server is different than what comes with Exchange.  If you look at the icon, the Windows version looks like an open book with a white cover, and the Exchange version looks like an open book with a yellow cover.

You only get those extra tabs when you run ADUC on a system that has had the Exchange System Tools installed.  Since you haven't done that to Tom, ADUC run on Tom won't display the tabs.

However, as I mentioned before, attempting to install the Exchange System Tools on a server has a prerequisite of having IIS installed and running.  I choose not to do this to any DCs and therefore I have to live with the fact that I cannot see the Exchange tabs on the DCs.  I also install the System Tools on my workstation (which requires installing the AdminPak but not IIS).

Dean, thank you for your reply.

I did the setup this way :

- Join the domain (on Jerry)
- Log as DOMAIN Administrator (on Jerry)
- Setup IIS, ASP.net, SMTP & NNTP  (on Jerry)
- Install Windows Server Support Tools (on Jerry)
- Start Exchange deployment (on Jerry)
- Meet first needs (on Jerry)
- Run “dcdiag /s:TOM /f:dcdiag.txt” (on Jerry)
- Run “netdiag /l” (on Jerry)
- Run Forestprep (on Jerry)
- Setup Exchange (on Jerry)
- Reboot Exchange server (on Jerry)

Then I reboot once both server. So far, even on Jerry I can't see any tab in the exchange administrator, which is like this :

http://www.christensen-software.com/images/nu008.gif

So I took the exchange cd on Tom and did :

- Log as domain administrator on Tom
- Setup the Exchange in "custom" mode and add the system administration tool
- Haven't found yet the exchange tab

Am I missing something ? Should I run anything on the Tom server other than the admin tool of exchange ?
