prem1211 -> Number Of Mail Sent To Smarthost (23.May2008 3:42:56 AM)

Hi,

I have got a single Exchange 2003 server and all outgoing internet mail are sent to our SMTP relay device using a smarthost (smarthost defined in exchange 2003 smtp connection document).

1) Want to know if a user send a single mail to 100 receipient & all 100 receipient are of different domains how many mail dose exchange will send to the SMTP relay device.

2) Want to know if a user send a single mail to 100 receipient but 50 are from one domain (abc.com) and 50 from another (xyz.com) how many mail dose exchange will send to the SMTP relay device.

3) And how many mail exchange will send if i use DNS to send mail to outside domain for scenario 1 & 2 above.

Regards,
Prem.

For 1) The Exchange server sends 100 mails.
2)Exchange sends 2 mails
3)No it does not make any difference using DNS

Reason: The process is called bifurcation, in Exchange 2003 by design the originating server creates 'n' number of copies for 'n' domains and sends it.
This splitting is done in the categorisation stage, however in Exchange 2007 this is changed and the bifurcation happens only at the latter stage i.e, if the mail is sent to 30 users in another exchange server, only one mails goes that target server and there it gets split to 30 mails
