Hi All,

Actaully i have a loacl exchange server and with that i want to send mails to an outer mail server . can anybody please tell me what steps  should follow to do the same.

I know i should enable rely  tried this and also make a SMTP connector but all this i do by hit and trial method . dont have the exact idea what are the steps.
please help me to do the same

I guess I'm looking for the same question here. I'm planning to use Exchange Server 2003 for local and Symantec Mail Security for SMTP at DMZ.

Did you find any solution for relaying?

If you want to send email via another server then you have to use an SMTP connector with it set to use a smart host.

Can't answer the question on the Symantec product as I don't use their products - I prefer to use something that works.

Not got the enough informaion from this.
Actually as i know to send mail to another domain i need to create an SMTP connector
i have done the same but not working for me.DO u think is there anuy additional setting i need to fix. please please reply soon. i have need of it.
Please provide me the steps to send mail to the outer domain from ur local domain.

Without knowing what error messages you are receiving, it is impossible to answer. The default configuration of the SMTP connector is usually fine, but sometimes it can require other settings to be used.

It mean to say if i wanna send mail to outbound server then i only need to Configure SMTP connector only am i right.i go the followinf error

This is the error which a user got after sending mail to another server.What you will say now.

Was that sending to another EXTERNAL email server?
Ensure that you do not have a smart host set on the SMTP virtual server, and if you have a smart host set on the SMTP connector that it is an external server not a local server.

I dont have set smart host .i have selected the "use DNS to route each address space..." option. please tell me if i am selecting this option do i need to set anything in the dns. i have already enter the MX record for my domain .

The message you are getting is an indication that mail is coming back. However it doesn't tell you where the loop is occurring, whether it is happening inside or outside.

When you created the SMTP connector, did you set the address space as * or a specific domain? The MX records - where have you set those? If in your internal DNS then that is useless. They need to be set by whoever looks after your domain.

Hi Simon,

I have mentioned a particular domain in the Address space not the '*'. and secondly i have already told you this is my local mean to say testing environment and i am using

Vmware with 2003 withe SP1 and Excahnge server.
it has also AD,DNS,RIS,DHCP,IIS .
i have enetred the MX record for my domain in my DNS.

Same time we have a linux person who has configured Sendmail on a test environment and set it to relay and all the mails are working fine and reaching at the destination.(the same where i want to send mail{outbound server})

Any solution

If the domain that you have put in the SMTP connector is not * but is the same as the domain that you are using locally and you have put an MX record in to your local dns then you have caused a loop. The server is doing a lookup on the domain and sending it to the MX record that it finds.

An MX record in your local DNS is pointless, as Exchange doesn't use them as part of its operation.

If your WINDOWS domain is example.com and you have put MX records in the DNS for example.com to point back to your Exchange server, AND you have put example.com in the address space of the SMTP connector with it set to use DNS, then you have a loop.

If you have used different domains then you need to look at what is actually happening to the email, from the SMTP logs to see why Exchange is detecting a loop. If the messages are being delivered to the second server and then coming back in then you have to look at the recipient server as the cause of the problem.

Actually i have as you say MX record for my domain but in the address space i have entered that domain to which i want to send mail
I cant check recipient server.
I have already told you that i am using lab environment with exchnage ,DNS,AD,RIS,DHCP all on one Vmware machine and with that  virtual machine i want to send mail to internet.

You don't have to keep writing that you are doing x and y. I can read.

If you can't check the recipient server then you are pretty much stuffed. Look at the SMTP logs if the messages are going out and then coming back then the problem is almost certainly with the remote server. It is very difficult to get emails to loop with Exchange.

Now i tried with Smart host . prepare a new machine and configure this as a smart host(Form IIS SMTP settings , i am right na).
But still getting the errors

The error means what it says - relaying was denied.
The message was rejected by the machine that you were trying to send the email through, not the Exchange server.
Have you configured relaying on the machine to act as a smart host? It is usually done by authentication or IP address.

I have configured rely on other machine and tried it but the error which i had pasted is coming.
Just wanna confirm from ur side is it possible to send mail to internet with local mail server.becoz how the other outbound server will come ro know about my exchange server(mean to say how my ip will be resolved in WAN).
i am little bit confused abt my assumption.
Am i right or wrong?

Vj better refer routing groups and connectors documentation from microsoft, I know this section is confusing for you, but get a clear idea of concept behind them then you will get a good hold on what sembee is trying to explain you.
