shertbert99 -> How to stop my server from sending spam? (4.Jun.2008 2:58:04 PM)

Hi I have exchange 2000 and installed the trial for gfi. It has a monitor tool and I can see that our server is indeed processing spam emails using random email addresses and sending out spam. Most of them is to us and non of the emails getting sent ever seem to use our domain name in the sender email address.

I am assuming I have a trojan on my server? What is a good tool I can use to scan my exchange server with for trojans/viruses?  It worries me scanning because I know normal virus scanners say they can screw up the email server if the M drive is scanned or something.

Also is there something I can install so my server will only send emails using our domain name in the email address? That should stop most of them.

Thanks

I doubt you're sending out spam. What you're probably doing is trying to send NDR messages to the alleged senders. Obviously the real senders masked who they were so your server is trying to send "sorry, nobody here by that name" back to someone who didn't send to you in the first place.

Stop sending NDRs. Turn them off and then see what's going out. You can't be a spammer unless you're an open relay and if you were an open relay you'd be in a lot more trouble than you think you are.

Ahh my mistake.  I tried what you said which didn't help but then I realized that the emails in this log are also the ones we are recieveing. So what I thought we were sending must be what we are recieving.

Are there any third party tools or does exchange have a tool were I can monitor what emails the server is sending out to see if our server is sending out junk mail? We got nailed with undeliverables we did not send and so I want to make sure they didn't come from our server.

Although, you probably are right if we were sending spam it would be noticable.

Thanks for the help

some joker out there is sending spam and makes it look like I send it from one of my domains. I know this of course because I get a lot of failure messages, not to mention stop spamming me requests. [image]http://forums.digitalpoint.com/images/smilies/mad.gif[/image]

Is there anyway you can stop such activities? I fear me my website is going to get blacklisted at this rate by many a spam filter. [image]http://forums.digitalpoint.com/images/smilies/eek.gif[/image]

Anyway, it's not doing my rep. any good [image]http://forums.digitalpoint.com/images/smilies/frown.gif[/image]

Hi Did you set authentication or restrict access on the SMTP virtual server?
