Hello all...Let me being by saying I am new to ms exchange.  Currently I have a 2000 exchange box that works.  I am adding a new server with server '03 and exchange '03 so I can better block spam e-mail with GFI mailessentials/security.  I was able to install the new server and setup exchange on it.  I was able to create a new mailbox on that server with a new AD account as well.

However, whever I try to send e-mail from my ad account (which is on the old exchange server) to the new AD account (which is on the new exchange server), I will receive the Underliverable error message.  It will do the same thing vice versa.

I assume there is a security setting somewhere that I need to change in order for them to send e-mails back and forth.

I will eventually migrate all the mailboxes of the old server onto the new, but I want to make sure everything is working on the new server first.

What does the NDR say, and did you leave the Integrated Windows Authentication checked (unchecking it will mean Exch2K and Exch2K3 servers will not be able to authenticate with each other)?

           The e-mail address could not be found.  Perhaps the recipient moved to a different e-mail organization, or there was a mistake in the address.  Check the address and try again.


Where is the integrated windows authentication checkbox?

The most common reason for this failure is a smart host set on the SMTP virtual server. If that is the case it must be removed. If you need to send email via another SMTP server then use an SMTP Connector.

Well I am now able to send e-mail from a mailbox on my old exchange server to a mailbox on my new exchange server, but not vice versa.

When I send an e-mail from new server to my old one, this is my NDR:

A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.

Do you have any SMTP connectors configured? If so, do you have any smarthosts configured on them or even the SMTP virtual server?

yes I have 1 SMTP connector.  I am not using a smart host.

Open the ESM and expand to your server, then Protocols, SMTP and open the properties of the Default SMTP Virtual Server.  Go to the Access tab and click the Authentication button.

maybe this can help, but I didn't try it until just now..

but when i use the mailbox on the new server, I can send e-mail outside of the organization.  I just can't send e-mail to users on the other (old) exchange box.

What does Message Tracking say?  Does the message end up in a queue?  If so, what is the queue's name?

Please confirm some information:
The two servers are in the same Exchange Organization
The two servers are in the same Routing Group

You had mentioned your recipient policy.  What in it are you questioning?

I don't want to answer your question incorrectly since I may be wrong, so here is a screenshot of my ESM.

Note, in the Member folder, HSSH-EXCH is listed as master, and EXCHANGE is listed as member.  HSSH-EXCH is my old exchange server (server 2000/exch 2000), and EXCHANGE is the new server (server 2003, exch 2003).

Thanks - you answered both questions.  The fact that you can see both servers indicates they are in the same Organization.  Your statement that you see both servers in the Members folder of the First Routing Group indicates they are in the same Routing Group.

The reason I asked about the Routing Group is that member servers in the same routing group attempt to send messages directly to each other when it is understood where the mailbox exists.

I'm curious.  Please perform a telnet test.  Do this on the new server, telnet to the name of the old server via port 25 and address the message to a user on the old server.  Post whether or not it succeeds and if it fails, state the reason.

Are you still getting the same NDR mentioned in your earlier posting? From my understanding, users who are on the original exchange server cannot send to the users on the new server (and vice versa)?

I get this NDR when I try to send mail from the new server to the old server.  I can send mail to the new server from the older server just fine.  I am sending/receiving mail from outlook.

I tried the OWA test exactly the way you told me, and I get the same NDR.
