rick81 -> inbound mail issue (16.Jun.2008 10:22:09 PM)

Hi,  i am setting up a test exchange 2003.
Having trouble with inbound mail.  Cannot receive from external source.  Sending from external source does not receive a bounceback.
Mail internal and outbound is fine.

I have changed default port from 25 to 26 as my isp blocks port 25.
I can telnet extnerally to the mail server on port 26, responds ok.  So its not a router or firewall issue.

Very strange, everything looks ok but for some reason mail inbound does not work and no bounce is received the other end.

Any ideas?

Let me try to explain this with a snail mail metaphor.  Your street address is the equivalent of your IP address.  Your server is represented by a house.  Port 25 is represented by a mail slot on the front door prominently labeled "MAIL".  Port 26 is represented by a hole in the ground in the flowerbed.

I have a letter I want to send to you.  I give the letter to the postal service who takes it to the proper street address.  She attempts to open the slot on the front door and finds it nailed shut.  She marks the letter undeliverable and sends it back to the return address.

Back to reality - if I want to send Email to you, I only know to use port 25 (SMTP).  My system isn't going to search for another way to deliver it.  By changing the port, you've nailed your slot shut.  If your ISP doesn't allow port 25, you have to find another way.  There is a service (the name escapes me) that will accept your mail on port 25 and forward it to you on another port.  Either that or use a business-class ISP service and not one geared towards home use.
