jwab -> Recover selected items from a previous backup (17.Jun.2008 12:26:53 PM)

My boss has accidentally deleted the notes from a task in outlook then saved the task. He needs it back badly. How can I retrieve the notes from a previously backed up copy of our information store?

I've been reading about the recovery storage group but it looks like if I want to access the mail and tasks of his mail box it will just replace what's in the existing mail box, I want to view a number of backups to see how far back I need to go to get the task before it was saved as 'empty'.

Is there a way to access the database and just view his tasks and perhaps copy/paste the notes into his current mail box? I really don't want to risk overwriting any thing?

Our back up was done using MS backup which is part of the server manager.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The way it was done in our company we've had a separate exchange server where we restored all the neccessary email data to. Then after restore is complete you can reconnect any mailbox you want and export anything you need either its tasks or calendar appointments through the Outlook export tools. With Exchange 2007 we of course started to use RSG.

That seems a really convoluted way, there must be a way to access the data and move it to like a backup folder of the mailbox in question?

Here is another way: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126.
I don't find it less convulated. But since you've asked...

If you recover the database to the RSG, you can use ExMerge to dump the contents (full or partial) of a particular mailbox to a PST file.  You can dump just the TASKS folder.
