I'm doing a hardare upgrade on our exchange server that requires me to rebuild exchange. I would like to keep the exchange server name the same. I think I need to remove exchange from AD, but what other obsticles may I run into by doing this?

You will be much better off if you install Exchange on the new server then migrate the mailboxes and public folders. That way you can keep everything running and phase in the users to make sure everything is working correctly. You can work around any hard-coded names by creating an internal CNAME (alias) entry in DNS pointing the old name to the new server if necessary (after the old server is retired).

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly a second server isn't an option. (We're a small school everything is minimal.) Would I just be better off giving this rebuild a new name and then using DNS to retarget the clients?

I'm confused. What hardware are you upgrading that requires you to rebuild Exchange and yet not be able to keep the existing server running long enough to perform a "swing" upgrade?

We're going from a raid1 to raid5 with new hard drives to increase the size. It's the same physical server.

You may not need to rebuild at all. How many partitions are going to be transitioned, and what is on each? Exchange works best if the boot partition and log files are stored on RAID1 and the databases on something with more spindles (RAID5 is good). Best practices dictates a RAID1 C: partition holding the OS and Exchange application, a separate RAID1 partition for the log files (separate physical drives is best), and a separate RAID5 (or 6 or 1+0) partition for the database. How many physical drives are installed now (and what size are they), and how many after the upgrade?

four drives total, each 74gig thanks for the practice tip. I didnt know that =)

What are each of the four existing drives doing now? How many drives can your server accommodate? I should also note that the biggest disk I/O consumers on an Exchange server are the database and the logs, so second-best configuration at least splits up those two functions onto different drive sets.
