smjones45832 -> User account with access to Exchange only (20.Jun.2008 10:28:42 AM)

Our company has a private contractor working for us who needs to have an internal Exchange email account so that we can keep company correspondence inside.  However, we do not want this user to have any rights to anything else on the server.  I've set the user up in AD and have created the mailbox in Exchange but I wasn't sure how to assign the security permissions.

Is there a certain group a user must be a member of in order to send and receive email from Exchange?  If I remove all group memeberships from his account will this work?

Any help would be appreciated!

This hasn't really got much to do with Exchange. If your shares and other systems are set up correctly your "everyone" group won't have access to anything so all the guy can get to is the workstation and the Exchange server.

Your answer depends on the permissions on everything else, not Exchange.

Here's a workaround I've used when needed:

Create the AD object and mail-enable it.
Open the properties of the object, go to the Account tab, and click on Log On To.
Select The Following Computers and enter the name of the server you use for OWA.

The user will only be able to log on to one of two places.  The OWA server (Exchange Front End or Back End) and OWA.  As long as you take proper precautions for the Exchange servers, that limits access only to OWA.
