mohanrav -> Full Backup.... (21.Jun.2008 10:43:10 AM)

Hi all....
I have a query abt the backing up exchange server DBs...
If we take a full back up of our DB's...we may lose the data at the later stage.

is it true..?
I can give u one scenario..
day 1:
Full back up has been done.
Day 2:
10 transcations occured and are stored in transaction log files which are yet to commit. Now store fails...

so we need to restore the DB's..
Im restoring my day1 back up and the automatic replay of my log files will commit the transaction to DB's along with the Day 1 back up...

here how we r losing the data...?
Pls clarify me and let me know if im wrong at any palce above..

Thanks for spending ur time here...
Goodwill,
Mohan R

You seem to understand how the recovery process works.  You will recover everything in the database from the full backup and everything in the transactional logs after.

What data do you think you are going to lose?

The Transactions that occured on Day 2..?

Again, you're thinking is correct.

Depending upon what backup software you are using, you may have the option of performing an Incremental backup.  This typically backs up just the transactional log files and purges those that have been committed to the database.

Then if you have to restore, you need the last Full backup and all the subsequent Incremental sets.

Or you can perform Full backups every night...
