One of our doctors decided to get himself laptop with Vista Enterprise. He set up his Outlook profile in cached mode and is trying to sync Offline Address Book. He is getting following error message:

Microsoft Exchange reported error (0x8004010F): 'The operation failed. An object can not be found'.

Articles related to this error advise to rebuild OAB. He tried to recreate his Outlook profile, even reinstalled Outlook itself and still gets the same error message. I have rebuilt OAB on the server but it seems nothing is helping. Anyone has any ideas what could have been wrong?

The error means "cannot find". Which method of OAB distribution are you using? Public Folders, Web or both?

What does autodiscover show? Does it show the correct URLs?

Simon.

Well, thats the thing. None of other 11 thousand users ever even asked about OAB. So I don't have much knowledge about it. All I've done so far is rebuilt OAB through ESM.

Where can I verify the information you've asked about? I can of course do some extra reading but if you know it off the top of your head and give me some hints I'd appreciate that.

If you have users in cached mode then you will be using the OAB. However Outlook 2007 can use a different distribution method. Therefore the question has to be - do you have any other users on Outlook 2007, who are also using cached mode. If you do and they are not getting an error then I would suspect it is an issue with this specific machine. If you don't then you need to look at your Exchange configuration.

Yes, he actually is using OAB on 5 other PCs and its working fine. Problem is with his laptop and I can't give him any specific advise since I don't have the laptop. I think I'll just suggest him to reset his user profile maybe and try it on the new one.

If it is unique to the machine, then standard Outlook issues procedure applies...

new Outlook profile
new Windows profile
Wipe the machine.

Nothing else works in my experience. If it is a brand new machine with the original build on it then it would probably benefit from being wiped.

He actually says that problems started on Vista Enterprise Edition. Anyway, i think I've given him enough help on unsupported products. Our company doesn't support Vista or Outlook 2007 yet. So he is on his own, I'll tell him to downgrade back to Business version in the worst case.

Outlook 2k7 uses a different mechanism to distribute the OAB than previous versions. Among other things, it requires that Exchange 2007 (Edge server, if you have one, otherwise Internet-facing Hub server) has a SAN/UCC SSL cert that includes 'autodiscover.yourdomain.tld' host name (where yourdomain.tld is your domain name), and that that host name has a valid DNS entry....OR you must do a lot of custom config work.
