cjoyce1980 -> Large Database Error (26.Jun.2008 8:25:24 AM)
I've been doing my monthly rounds and being a good administrator as you do... during my Microsoft Exchange BPA (Best Practices Analyzer) check a get the following error:-
quote:
The mailbox store 'Mailbox Store (MAILSERVER)' on server MAILSERVER is 18 GB in size. Standard Editions of Microsoft Exchange Server are limited to a maximum database size of 16 GB.
I'm currently running Win 2003 SBS with Exchange 2003 SP1.
Any clue how to get my store back to 16GB?
and currently we are using just under 10GB

Get yourself up to SP2. You will be able to have 75GB of space. In terms of this 10GB you talk about, where do you get that number from?

Thanks for the prompt reply, but we dont want to move to SP2 to get the larger limit as we are a small company with around 40 users. we like to the database small to make it more managable for the backups....
and i get the 10GB figure for the mailboxes

So take a look at Event ID 1221. You should have a load of free space in it. Do not expect 8GB of free space because your 18GB and your 10GB will be a little skewed. You've probably got 4 or 5GB of space. Do an eseutil with the /d switch to defrag it. Google for eseutul and offline defragment. You're pretty close to the limit anyway so you should probably do SP2 anyway.

thanks for that... will try that later
also, if i install SP2, is there a way of limiting the database size rather than having it at its full capacity or using mailbox quota's?

Yes. Read the release notes. You will be given a registry entry that you can progressively change to go up to 75GB. The default is 18GB but you can specify any number between 18 and 75.
