Can anyone explain why a gmail user inconsistently has problems sending email to my Exchange 2003 server?  He is replying to a message from me, there is no attachment, and if he tries a second time to do the exact same thing it usually works and I get the message.

When it fails he receives this:

From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <mailer-daemon@googlemail.com>
Date: Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
To: foobar@gmail.com

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

    me@mydomain.net

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error.
The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused (state 18).

3 questions.

mydomain.net is yours?
do you have an mx record pointing to your domain?
is your domain registered?

in addition to the above questions, how many MX records do you have for your domain? Where are they pointing to?

I changed the domain name in the post for privacy reasons.  I own the domain name.  It is registered.  There is one MX record for it.  Registered with GoDaddy.  Total Control of DNS/MX shows:

  • One A (Host) record for Host @ pointing to my server's IP.
  • Three CNAME (Alias) entries for www, ftp, and mail, all pointing to @ (mail is used for OWA)
  • One MX (Mail Exchange) record with priority 0, Host (mydomain.com), goes to the IP address of my server.  (Note: mydomain.com changed from my real domain again)

That's it.

Thanks.
