Has anyone found a simple way to purge a folder from within a mailbox?

We have recently been doing audits of the mailbox usage and found a few where they have been keeping some 600-700 thousand or more emails in a single folder.

Opening the folders is next to impossible as outlook basically just locks up, using IMAP and a 3rd party client doesn't help as the sheer number of headers kills most clients and then if left long enough trying to open the mailbox it causes exchange to grind to a halt.

Any suggestions on what we can use to get rid of this folder? I've dug through many forums and kb articles and couldn't find one which would help.

Purging the mailbox entirely is not an option and being its a production box used for a substantial amount of incoming customer support requests (we are an ISP of over 200 thousand customers) we can't simply take it offline.

I had thought of redirecting things to a temp mailbox but still doesn't solve how to delete the damn folder short of simply moving everything we want to keep and then purging the mailbox entirely and starting again.

Can you access those folders using Outlook Web Access ? If so, you might be able to create new folders and move some of the emails to reduce the mailbox size.

Slow, but it may work.

I'd recommend that you use ExMerge to purge the messages.  It does have a limit of 2GB for the resulting PST file, but read through this article from scripting expert Glen Scales if that is an obstacle.
