Hi All,

We would like to provide POP mailboxes for a number of different businesses.

We have Server 2003 standard edition, and Exchange 2003 Enterprise edition

Would the best way of achieving this be to follow this "rough" plan:

1) turn windows 2003 server into a domain controller (create new domain)
  • dcpromo
  • forestprep
  • domainprep

2) install exchange 2003 enterprise, plus SP1 and SP2

3) configure user accounts / mailboxes


We would also like to implement some kind of cluster in the future, which will provide redundancy should one of the servers fail.

Is there anything wrong with this "general" plan? Thank you

POP3 using Exchange?
I wouldn't do it. The costs make it prohibitive. Each of those POP3 accounts will require a license. Plus as you are reselling it, the license will have to be a Service Providers license. Regular CALs cannot be used. Having an SPLA means you will need a support agreement from Microsoft as they will no longer allow pay as you go calls regarding hosted environments.

By using POP3 you are losing about 90 of the functionality of Exchange, I would suggest that you use another product, such as SmarterMail. This will give you a web GUI for email access and will be much cheaper than using Exchange, with non of the licensing restrictions.

Man alive I have to concur with Sembee it would be madness for just pop mail. There are some very good walk throughs on the net that will set you up with sendmail or even something like CGP (CommunigatePro www.stalker.com ) which gives you pop IMAP or even a Outlook MAPI connection. without the server or manpower overhead of exchange.

This is of course linux based but if all you want iis pop then your way better off going this route. Exchange really isn't a pop mail server (Even if it does pop)
