hi all,

we have a domain name <abcd.net> registered with networksolutions.com
we have purchase 15 email id's and all these email IDs are configured in each users Outlook(pop3). 
In Outlook pop3: mail.abcd.net
                smtp: smtp.abcd.net
User are able to send and receive emails.

Our company management descided to implement MS Exchange in our office. But we do not have a public IP. we have high speed ADSL internet connection.

We purchased MS Exchange 2007 and GFI Mail essential.
we are stuck in the setup up. we do not know how to go about.
MS exchange is installed. Since we do not have a public IP we do not know how to proceed.

Please we all looking for an expert opinion.

Hi mate,

Let me try my best effort to explain what i understood from your statement.
You want to have Exchange 2007
Simple topology:
Keep your DC\GC\DNS, Exchange and other critical application servers or any windows servers as private static ip address
Then have a firewall in the perimeter (DMZ) network like one of the example soft firewall ISA 2006.
In ISA you should keep 2 nic card
one card for your internal network and another card for public network
Contact ISP to get one public ip address, put those details in ISA public network
In the private network keep only private ip and that is also static.

In the default gateway of all the internal computer give the default gateway as ISA pvt ip address.
so that any queries goes out of the network,it should go via ISA and then it will reach to internet
In ISA create a rules to forward all the email to Exchange 2007.

For incoming you need to contact the ISP to create a MX record for your exchange server that ip address should be your ISA.

For external your DNS will take care.

We do not want to go for a Public IP, becuase it is too expensive here. Using dynamic IP how we can configure exchange for send & recive emails.

Hi,

You need to have a mx record registered for receiving mail from the internet. For this you need a static IP-address because from what I know there is no provider who can deliver MX records with a dynamic IP. Also this is not what you want because you can lose some mails because caching DNS servers. This can cause that a mailserver tries to send to your previous dynamic IP address while you already received a new one.

Convince your management that you need a static IP.

Hey buddy,

This can be very easily accomplished.

Sign up with a dynamic DNS provider like No-IP.com or dyndns.org (I prefer No-IP). These are both free services if you use their basic service.

Set up a host name through the service and download there client software and set it up to run as a system service with the shortest update time.

Edit your DNS records for your domain creating CName records instead of A records for anything you want to resolve to your dynamic IP (mail.abcd.net > mycreatedhost.no-ip.org). Create an MX record using mail.abcd.net for your domain.

Both of these services have extemely short TTL values so once they are set up, there are no propagation issues when your IP changes. Your new IP info will be available withing 5 minutes for all request from anywhere with the exception of celular providers who ignore the expiration times in the DNS records to reduce lookups.

The caveats for you here are:
a) Many IPSs block port 25 inbound and outbound.
b)You can't set up a RDNS record for a dynamic IP so many host will reject your connection attempts.

There are simple ways around both of these as well. No-IP offers a mail reflector which will redirect your mail to your server on any port you choose (for a fee). You simply set your NAT firewall to direct that external port (say 2525) to your server internal IP at port 25.

For sending with a dynamic IP, your are best off setting up a connector to send all mail outbound through your ISPs mail servers.

I have several clients who have been doing this for YEARS succesfully. If you need more help, let me know. It should be pretty simple though.

hi,
I found another solution. Install GFI Mail essential. Pop3 connector is a part of it.  GFI will pull email from domain. and it will send all email to ms exchange 2007.
Anybody have any experinece in this.

POP3 connectors suck.
Doesn't matter whose you use - they all suck.

Primary reason - unable to support BCC messages.
Exchange is not designed to be used with a POP3 connector.

You need to verify if port 25 is open inbound or not on your service. If it is, then you can run Exchange on it natively. I ran Exchange on a dynamic IP address for three years.

A POP3 connector would have nothing to do with outbound email anyway, as it is for INBOUND email.
If you are on a dynamic IP address then you use a SMTP/Send Connector to route email via your ISPs SMTP server as a smart host.
