Hello all .

Actually we are moving our entire organazation e-mail infrastructure to exchange 2007 .

1. Is it really that for LOCAL MAPI clients ( microsoft exchange users ) has a direct access on the mailboxs server , in other words , if the HUB server goes down , do am still able to send and recieve e-mails from the mailboxs specifically for the users in the same site .

2. does anyone have an articles about how am gonna configure the SMART HOST .

Thanks alot .

No you won't be able to send mail.  ALL mail regardless if you're in the same database on the same server has to go through a HUB for message compliance (transport rules/etc.).

Configure Smart Host:

If you have mailbox role on the same box holding hub transport role and for xyz reasons the hub role fails to work - any email that is being sent outside will be stuck in the draft folder of your outlook until the local server hub role does not start.

I am sure there would be documentation on how to get the above started working - however, i am yet to find it.

According to the following, it should contact another Hub Transport:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232193(EXCHG.80).aspx

quote:

If the local Mailbox server is also running the Hub Transport server role, the local server is notified. If the local Microsoft Exchange Transport service is not running or the local Hub Transport server cannot process new mail submissions because of back pressure, another available Hub Transport server is notified. For more information about back pressure, see Understanding Back Pressure.

Also, you can override the submission list by using "Set-ExchangeServer -SubmissionServerOverrideList"

I was just reading a lot of the transport/routing stuff on Technet yesterday and happened to come across that.  I remembered your post and figured I would follow up.
