thomasb -> Can't send email to internal emails but to external (23.Oct.2008 8:48:30 AM)

Hi,
I'm a real newbie in exchange 2007 server
In our office we have installed an new windows 2008 with exchange 2007 x64
The setup of exchange server 2007 seem to worked just fine, didn't get anything errors.

I have installed owa also. When i logged in with an user and tried to send an email to an external email it worked just fine.
But when i tried to send an email to our domain (not the same as the domaincontrollerin our office)
Then i get an reply that it can't be delivered.
Does anybody now the solution for this?
A little about the system:

We have an external smarthost, we have set up an send connector to point to internet with the smarthost ipaddress.
We have set up accepted domains to include our domain.
Hopefully some of you now what the problem is, and how to solve it.

If i have missed something here let me now, all information needed will be given.
Regards,
Thomas Borge

First of all - you can run Exchange Mail Flow Analyzer.
SEcondly, please run Queue Viewer to check who sent the NDR back to you.
Also, please do tell me if you can send a test email to youself.

How many Mailbox / Hub servers do you have within your E2k7 environment.

Also, you mentioned
quote:

But when i tried to send an email to our domain

- where is this mailbox located ?? on 2k7 (locally) or on another 2k7 (same / different site) or 2k3 box.

Thanks for the information.

I have tried to rund the queue viewer but it didn't show any emails.
In the reply i get it's from the local exchange server.

I have 1 connector in my E2K7 environment.

For the moment i only have one mailbox located on the e2k7 server, and the rest is on our headquerter office on a w2k3 server.
They can't either receive emails from me.

And their server is the main exchange server we uses for sending emails out throught. (The smarthost is them)

On 2k3 we have figured out this problem but on E2k7 we haven't managed to figure out any solution yet.

A little more information from the exchange that might help you guys helping finding out what i have done wrong.

5.1.1: The e-mail address is invalid or does not exist in the recipient e-mail system. One of the most common causes is that a recipient cannot be found in the directory for an authoritative domain. Troubleshooting: Verify that the recipient address is formatted correctly and resend the message.

I have checked and the emailaddress i tries to send to are an real address. We uses it everyday.

Ok so people within E2k3 can send email amongst them selves AND people within E2k7 box can send emails to them selves. This means there is no problem on individual boxes except something between.

Since these are between Routing Groups - can you please check using ESM (on E2k3 box) do you have bi-lateral RGC created  Or on E2k7 box shell just run the command let Get-RoutingGroupConnector | FL. Verify if things are set to default.

Also, you added the NDR (thanks for that)

Are both E2k7 and E2k3 in same site / domain - do they both discover same domain controllers. Can you telnet to E2k3 box from E2k7 server to check if mails do flow on.

Run Exchange Mail Flow Analyzer tool.

thomasb -> RE: Can't send email to internal emails but to external (23.Oct.2008 12:48:45 PM)

Yes the people on the e2k3 can send emails to everyone. But on the e2k7 they can send to external emails and to local AD domain of course but not in the domain ourdomain.com

I tried the get-Rout command but nothing happend in the command shell on e2k7
I don't have access to the e2k3 server since this is not in our ad-domain.

We have almost the same domain but we have no.local instead of their si.local.
Sow they don't discover the same domain controller. This is totaly seperated from each other.

Yes i can telnet the smarthost on port 25, and all emails we send to external emails also goes through this and works fine.

I cant find the mail flow analyzer tool in my exchange standard edition. I got mail flow troubleshooter and message tracking that has the same icons.

Thanks for any help so far!

Well, if u ran the command
Get-RoutingGroupConnector | FL and nothing returned - this means that there cannot be a mail flow between both servers.

Now, this connector is important for queries to be sent across to E2k3 box.

quote:

Yes the people on the e2k3 can send emails to everyone. But on the e2k7 they can send to external emails and to local AD domain of course but not in the domain ourdomain.com

IF both these domains are top-level-domains, this means that we are not working with parent-child domain relationship - there has to exist a trust between both domain. Else, how would your domain pass on message to the other server without knowing which server / store to pass on the information.

Let me explain.
If a message comes into your E2k7 box (Now these are ifs and buts don't tell me NO it doesn't happen - it is just an example). E2k7 would then search for the email address of the recipient it would be something@domain.com. @domain is related to your organization since your recipient policy states that (Email Address policy in E2k7 = recipient policy of E2k3).

So, message is accepted - however E2k7 discovers that the recipient is not part of your domain - at this moment E2k7 box would want to query some one else (that is your second domain) - if it cannot E2k7 will throw an NDR back to sender - stating SORRY I CANT FIND THE USER - NONE OF MY BUSINESS - HAPPY READING THE NDR. So, in kinds words it says.

quote:

5.1.1: The e-mail address is invalid or does not exist in the recipient e-mail system. One of the most common causes is that a recipient cannot be found in the directory for an authoritative domain. Troubleshooting: Verify that the recipient address is formatted correctly and resend the message.

Thanks for all the info.

I will check with the it-man on our main office. But as far as i now it's already been set up an trust between the domains.

Yes i got nothing by typing in the command. i will check the ports on our network, and the head office network to see if something is blocked.

Thomas

Well, thanks a million for getting back at lightning fast speed.

To carry on my legacy to write lenghty answers, i would like to tell you without having a RGC in place E2k7 can never send an email to any user in any mailbox on any legacy (E2k or E2k3) box EVER. So creating this is like thumb-rule. It's your gateway for mail - flow + pf replication to and from the other side of the fence.
