I know I should know this, but I can't recall: how do I set up an SMTP address and mailbox that is not associated with any particular user? This is a mailbox that will be used by multiple users in a high-turnover position, and I'm afraid if I associate it with any one account, that person will quit and the account will get deleted.

Can you tell me what would be the purpose of this mailbox ?? I mean, would it be used for calendar - like conference room booking OR a shared mailbox - something like people will send emails on behalf of it.

Explain this to us better so we can help you better

Sure. It's a mailbox to be listed in our marketing materials. Potential customers can use it to ask for information. But the position which answers those requests has high turnover, so I'd rather not tie the box to any one user account. Also, it makes more sense organizationally to have a totally seperate mailbox and just assign permissions to it.

I do think that the person who answers the emails that come to it will need to reply on beahalf of it.

That make any sense?

You can no longer create a mailbox that isn't associated with an AD object. What you want to do is create a generic user object (e.g. Marketing) and give other users permissions to it. You can configure Send As or Send on behalf permissions afterwards.

.....Or you could setup a mail enabled Public Folder.

Creating a mailbox and giving it Send Behalf of permission would be a better option. I think we should go with it

@ Brily .. I don't think that creating a Public folder is a good option that we could follow

I would put this on a group, possibly with a public folder as a member of the group so that the messages are never lost. Then direct the emails to whoever is working with them. Set the Send As permissions as required and put a rule in Outlook to flag them differently.
