Domain A - In my current environment i am running Exchange 2003 Std on Windows Server 2003 x32. Domain B - I have a second server that i want to create a new domain on, running Exchange 2007 Std on Windows server 2008 x64. First question: Can i do a Remote Connection from a desktop within domain A to the server i want to set up on domin B ? I tried using the ip and setting it up as a workgroup server but no luck! Is it possible to initially connect the second server to domain A and start creating exchange 2007 or will it create a conflict with my production exchange 2003 ? Obviously i dont want to do this! Thanks

Please NEVER try to do all such great task with live environment, if you want a server to end up with first domain - stick to it, if this is destined to be with second domain - let the poor server be there.

Should i create my new exchange 07 server under the same domain as my 03 exchange server, then once it is all working, create the new domain? I assume this will just send the same emails to both servers? Right now i cant get past the hub transport prerequisits as is keeps asking for a domain name but i have nowhere to enter one as the 07 exchange sw is not loaded yet!

Create a new domain for new users OR move the entire server ?? If its for users - you can go on create N number of domains - no restriction on that. If its moving the server - Not supported. quote:

Why are you jumping to the installation before you understand what are you going to achieve. Removing Exchange isn't that easy on a E2k7 box - let me tell you that very clearly niether has MSFT documented this any place for a manual remove of Exchange 2007. Relax first.

My goal is to create a new domain on a test server using Exchange 07 to learn about the features and functionality. Only after i understand how it works will i do the exmerge etc. For the moment i just want to install exchange 07 as i have never done a new install of exchange, and i have to learn sometime:) So how do i create a new domain prior to the sw being installed ? Thanks

Well, if that is the case - take a separate box - install AD on it - make it a single server environment (if you have the liberty then you may bring in another couple of boxes). Name is as Exchange2007.com or what ever you may like. Hence, this server would be a DNS - DC - GC with a brand new Ad forest. Place the CD in - click on setup.exe - install all the updates mentioned in the welcome screen for installation - select Mailbox, Hub, CAS role and installation hope fully should be smooth. Once you are doing playing with your new toy - format the box and then we can decide what should be the next step.

When i go thru the dcpromo setup i run into an issue where it asks me to setup a static ip address instead of using a dynamic ip address. When i change the dynamic ip address to a static one, it does not connect to the internet! Any ideas on how to get around this ? I have 2 windows server 2008 machines and they both fail on the static ip address but run fine on the auto detect settings. My other windows server 2003 machines run fine on the static ip addresses! Thanks

It's because the IPv6 is dynamic. Personally, I just disable IPv6 on DC, set a static on IPv4, and all is well.

If it works with dynamic, you're entering the static information incorrectly.

I have tried running an ipconfig and using that ip address and also using one outside of my scope. Neither works! subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 default gateway: is 192.168.1.1 preferred dns: is the same as my ipaddress Is this wrong ?

You have your preferred DNS set to yourself? That's why you can't access the internet. You don't have DNS installed yet so your root hints aren't installed and therefore can't do recursion. Once you DCPROMO and DNS is installed, your DNS root hints will be there and your server will be able to use itself as a DNS server for recursion.

You don't need internet to do a DCPPROMO. Just do a DCPROMO as how your configuration stands right now. Your machine will become a Domain Controller with DNS and because of that, internet lookups will start working.

Set a MX record to point to your Firewall / SMTP Gateway / Exchange server on internet - this is normally done by asking your ISP to set this for you. Also, you would also need to send your emails to port 25 to your ISP, so you need to inform them about this also.

Thanks for the feedback! I have been informed by my ISP that i need to edit the setting on my Check Point safe@office 500 router to enable 1 to 1 NAT mapping for my external ip to the internal ip for my new server. I am not quite sure how to do this and the checkpoint forums are not clear. Under the security settings it has rules or NAT. Do i need to setup a rule or just the NAT ? Under create new NAT it offers: The source is: should this be the external ip ? The destination: should this be the internal ip ? The service is? dont know ? Thanks
