I am planning to move my Exchange 2003 on to new hardware.

I have some queries.

Do i need to install a fresh copy of MS-Exchange 2003 on new hardware. If yes, do i also need to run ForestPrep and Domain Prep on my AD again as it was runned before when i have installed old Exchange server.

Do i need to install Exchange 2003 with Deployment tools for Exchange 2003. I will already installed all the pre-requists.

I need to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2003 that is Inter-Organizational Migration to Exchange Server 2003 or i need something else ??

In Replicate all public folders to another server

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. If the Display administrative groups option is turned on, expand Administrative Groups, and then expand First Administrative Group.
    Note To display administrative groups, right-click Your_Organization, click Properties, click to select the Display administrative groups check box, click OK two times, and then restart Exchange System Manager.
  3. Expand Folders, expand Public Folders, right-click a top-level public folder, and then click Properties. When i am expanding Folders > Public Folder (Right click on public folders). I can just see 3 tabs General, Detail, Security. There is no Replication Tab. But i can see Replication Tab in First Administrative Group > Servers > Server Name > Public Folder Store (Right Click). but still no add button there
  4. Click the Replication tab, and then click Add.
  5. In the Select a Public Store box, select the name of the server where you want a replica of this public folder (the destination server), and then click OK.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK. If this public folder has any subfolders and if you want these subfolders to have a replica on the destination server, right-click the top-level public folder, click All Tasks, and then click Manage Settings.


can you guide me where i am wrong

The swing migration is the best option for you, in this case you will install an extra Exchange server in your organization and then move everything to it. After the server runs OK you remove the old one.

Hi,

You can also refer the below technet article which helps for  moving an Exchange 2003 to new hardware keeping the same server name but this will require a some downtime.

This is also one of the steps you can go for in this you dont have to take the pain of migrating everything to new server in this after disasterrecovery switch you can go with restore.

I would perform a Disaster recovery.

Hi,

Disaster recovery is the best way to complete this task in a short time period (make sure we have exchange installed on a member server)

installing new server and replicating PF, Moving the mailboxes, rehome the system folder would consume more time. and also we have to recreate the profile for OL users.

Simply take a copy of Database files,
Remove the old server from the network (Just unplug the network cable)
Change the name and the Ip of the new server same to old old one.
In Active directory users and computers reset the computer account.
Join the new server to the domain.
Install Exchage with /disasterrecovery swithch
install the SP2 for exchage using /disasterrecovery swith
copy the database files to the respective location. (you can fine the location in the store properties under the database path)
mount the sores
Clear the check mark on do not mount the sore at startup for all the stores.
restart the server. (it might take some time to come up please wait)
Now migration has been completed.


Install ExBPA and do a Helth check.(fix if it catches any issues becaues its a good practice)

DONT BRING THE OLD SERVER AGAIN TO THE NETWORK

******IMPORTANT:******** Please make sure the configuration og the new server same to the old server

1. Drive partitions  (if hte database is located on the E drive on the old server we have to have E drive partitioned on the new server, same for log files)

2. RAM, Processor (it has to handle the load equl or higer capacity good)
