Hi
Can you please guide me how to restore a public folder from backup.
One the users is requesting to restore a few contents of a public folder. Our environment is of Exchange2003.
Note: The retention period is already over.
I have experience in performing mailbox restoration and restoration of private information store from backup but not experienced in restoring a public folder.
Please guide me the steps

You will need a recovery server. You cannot restore public folders to your product server. After restoring the data you will have to use Outlook to Extract it to a PST file and then move the PST file to the live network and put the data back.
The use of a recovery server for public folder restores is fully documented on Technet at Microsoft.com

First Question:
Whats the back up that u have ??
If its an NTbackup, u cannot do the same.
If its something else, as Simon told, you can get the same restored to a recovery server and get the data back up.
You dont have to actually use a physical machine, rather go for a virtual machine, dowload and install MS Virtual Server with the same Name and ip address, not in the network, restore it, and create a user and drag it to PST.

Hi,
Can you please tell me why ntbackup can't be used in restoring public folder??
Do you have any link that explains? and also want technet link of restoring public folder in alternate server., I got it on the Mailbox store restoration.

You can't use NTBACKUP unless the server is identical because NTBACKUP cannot do a redirected restore. Therefore to do a restore you would need another server with the tape drive in it, where the server is identical to production - what is known as a recovery server.

Hi Simon,
I can't fully agree with you,
Bcz last week i have restored a Exchange 2000 mailbox in a Exchange 2003 server which is in same administrative group(Server name are different).
I have copied .bkf file from 2000 server to 2003 server. Created RSG,Created Mailbox store of 2000.
During Restore operation, in the dialog box where we providing temperory log location, we need to change the server name to point it to the 2003 server.
Restore completed successfully.
If you have MS link for Public folder store restore please provide. we got an public folder request from client.

Mailbox Store restores are different to public folder restores.
You can put a restore of a mailbox on to a different server, particularly if it is Enterprise edition because you can have multiple mailbox stores.
However Public Folder stores are a pain because of the limitations.
Furthermore if you have a separate BKF file, and not a tape, then that also makes things easier to restore as you can move the file around for restoration purposes.

I'm also trying to restore a public folder.
I followed KB823176 to create a Recovery Server. I made sure the SP levels on the server and for Exchange are same as the one for Production.
I was able to restore from tape using NTBackup (selected only Log files and the Public Folder Store). After the tape drive was active for 35 minutes, NTBackup told me it restored successfully, but the counts for Directories, Bytes, and Files were all at zero in the log file..
I have now tried it twice. Do I have to make sure I choose the Mailbox Store as well? What happens if that fails because that is going to take a lot longer than just restoring the Public Folder Store.
Any pointers are appreciated. Thank you.

Yes. I dismounted both the Private & Public stores, deleted the files in \program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata, according to the KB article, marked it as overwritable for restore... but after it went through the restoring from tape, the data are not written to disc, and all counters were at zero.

* Did you check the event logs. Any specific event IDs pertaining to public folder or Backup/Recovery in the app logs
* Did you try removing the catalogs and adding it again.
* Hope the IS is started while performing the restore.
