MS issued a hotfix to solve this issue that brought the version of store.exe up to 5.5.2657.27 - however, this hotfix is no longer available because 5.5 is no longer supported.
You should really be thinking about upgrading to a more recent version of Exchange - MS just announced the forthcoming 'E14', which is four versions further on than 5.5!!

Exchange database may corrupt. You can use ESEUTIL or ISINTEG to check and fix database but you should perform online/offline database backup before any actions (perfer offline backup).
If you not sure, you can discount all network. Stop Exchange Information Store service and then rename databases (Mail Store and Public Folders). Then start Exchange Information Store and monitor CPU usage. If it works fine that mean database is corrupted. You need to fix it by Exchange command.
