I have a single Exchange 2007 SP1 (rollup 5). It was originally migrated from EX03 ages ago, but this is a recent problem.

I use the Exchange Console to create a new user and mailbox. Sometimes (not all), when an internal user attempts to send mail to the user they receive this error:

#550 5.2.0 STOREDRV.Deliver: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service reported an error. The following information should help identify the cause of this error: "MapiExceptionUnknownUser:16.18969:B7000000,

If an external user attempts to email the same user they get a slightly different error:

#550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

This does not seem to happen all the time. Deleting the account and/or mailbox does not seem to help. Looking at the AD User, the email attribute seems to be there. This is getting very frustrating as it usually takes a few days of trying to create and recreate the mailbox before it finally takes.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Well the error obviously indicate that there is no data about the user in AD. For such users, check the ADSI attributes to see if they are populated properly, if not, then there could be some problems in AD replication.

Thanks for the pointer in the right direction.

It was indeed related to a problem with AD. One of the DC's was not replicating properly which was doing all sorts of strange things that were not immediately obvious.
