adgroup -> outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (16.Jan.2009 6:56:32 AM)

hi
I have installed exchange 2007 with SP1 on windows 2003 X64. Everything seems to me fine. I can successfully connect to server and send email using OWA. I can ping server by name, ip and FQDN.
But when i open the Microsoft outlook click "Microsoft Exchange server" in the server type even i define the correct name of server and correct username and click check name, but unable to connect to exchange server.
If i type the FQDN of server it shows following error " THE ACTION COULDNOT BE COMPLETED. THE CONNECTION TO EXCHANGE SERVER IS UNAVAILABLE, OUTLOOK MUST BE ONLINE OR CONNECTED TO COMPLETE THIS ACTION.
But if i type only the server name or ip address.
then the error it shows "THE NAME COULDNOT BE RESOLVED.THE ACTION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED.

Any help ?

hi mate,

Does that user got stamped with email address?

RUS issue..?

Neko -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (16.Jan.2009 7:13:00 AM)

I assume no Outlook client works, and that it's not an isolated incident.

Issues like that are usually caused by unavailability of the Global Catalog, or sync problems in updating that Global Catalog.

Maybe some of this contributes to the solution? http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid43_gci1119795,00.html#

hi

Thanks for your response ..
Infact i have checked all the tests and the result seems to be the exact, I mean no issue recorded. But I was unable to connect to exchange usign outlook
I don't know what i did wrong? If i connect using OWA, doesn't it required Global Catalog ? then what happened with microsoft outlook.
BTW i have enabled FORWARDER in dns and give the ip addresses of DNS given by my ISP. May be that is creating the problem. advise me if that is the issue.

Any help

What version of OL client are you using? Does the same thing happen with all the version of OL client? Try using OL2K7 if you havent tried with that and see if it works?

As far as the forwarders entry in DNS is considered; it should be fine as long as its set in the proper place (i.e. the FORWARDERS tab in the properties of the DNS server). Make sure none of these IP address are mentioned on the client or server NICs.

Try rebooting the local GCs and recycle the Exchange services after that. Most of the times it does help.

Also verify that the Windows firewall feature is disabled on both the client as well as on the server.

Let me know if these steps help!

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (22.Jan.2009 3:19:49 AM)

hi
If this is related to Global Catalog then how can i check that GC is working properly or not ?
BTW in Active directory sites and services in the properties of NTDS Settings GC is checked on the proper server.
Exchange server has windows 2k3 x64 with SP2 installed and domain controllers have windows 2003 with sp1 (32 bit) and once i have tried to install the SP2 on the DC but during the installation it has got some errors and when i reboot that server it started to revert the server back to the state with Sp1 installed.

May be that is the issue, If that is the issue then please guide me how can i resolve this. Because i have to implement exchange server in our organization. none of the exchange server 2003/2007 are working i have checked both versions on the two different servers.

Any help

I've never played with Exchange 2007, so I'm not the most knowledgeable on the issue here, but if updating to a newer SP didn't work, there might be something there to cause issues.

In exchange system manager, look at the properties of the exchange server,
directory access tab. This will tell you which GC is used and you can also
change the GC to the desired one.

Since resolving the name and using OWA works, DNS doesn't sound like the likely culprit, although it could be causing you grief with certain SRV records. Possibly run the NetDiag utility on the server to see if it crops up errors.

NetDiag is part of the Windows 2003 support tools: http://www.petri.co.il/download_windows_2003_sp1_support_tools.htm

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 1:43:30 AM)

while checking the problem i have came to know that when i try to connect using OWA using
https://mail.domain.com/exchange
Initially server prompts to enter to username & password. while the dialog box of username & password shows connecting to exchange. if i simply enter the username and password of the domain account like username abc password abc,
it never let me login and continuos prompting to enter the username and password. Both exchange and DC are in the same domain, But if enter the username in this format DOMAIN\USER and password it allows me and the OWA page is shown and allows me to enter the DOMAIN\USERNAME and password. again here if i enter the DOMAIN\XYZ username and password then it allows me and shows the inbox.
My question is why it initially prompts me for password? Although i was already login using domain username and password.

May be this will help in the troubleshooting.

Any help

Bro disable the windows firewall on your exchange server and on 1 of your client and test.

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 3:27:35 AM)

Its already disabled.[:(]. I have already test by installing Outlook on Exchange server and check by creating Account using "Microsoft Exchange" tab in the email accounts creation. But same error.

I think issue is basically Global Catalog.

Any other clue ?

darthyduck -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 3:30:26 AM)

try adding the server name and IP address on the client host file in the system32 folder. Then try and see if you can connect.

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 4:08:07 AM)

still no positive result.

All dcdiag, Netdiag, Dnscmd & Dnslint commands executed & passed successfully without any errors.
one more thing which i found during troubleshooting is that during the creation of MICROSOFT EXCHANGE account in outlook errors are shown like "name couldnot be resolved. Action couldnot be completed"
These errors are occurred when i type the correct username but if type wrong username just for testing the error changes with
"The name couldnot be resolved. The name couldnot be matched to a name in the address list"
This error shows that exchange respond to outlook.

Any other help [:(]

Is the x64 server also a DC/GC?

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 4:38:41 AM)

NO its not, It has only exchange server installed which is a member of domain.we are using a single domain model and all the computers and exchange are in a single domain.

One Domain controller                10.1.1.1        (Also a local DNS Server)
One Alternate Domain Controller.10.1.1.2        (Alternate DNS Server)

No default gateways are defined on both domain controllers.
Forwarder is configured on both DNS servers to the Dns Address provided by ISP.
Everything is working properly except Exchange 2007 X64.
Both Domain controllers which are 32 bit have Sp1 installed, But Exchange Machine which has exchange installed have Sp2 on it.

Any other information you required ?

darthyduck -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 4:50:55 AM)

Bro

From what I know abt exchange 2003, the server must be a domain controller and also the Global Catalog server(by default)so it can authenticate users and also ease the job when creating mailboxes for user.

This could be your problem whereby your exchange server is not a DC.

Maybe the experts in here can come in and advice?

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 5:04:52 AM)

no dear its not necessary that exchange server must be a DC. Experts says its not a good practice to install Exchange on the domain controller.

Anyways thankyou very much

But still waiting for the solution

You still havent answered my question. Which version of Outlook is affected? If you have legacy clients like OL2K3...then verify that you have PF store mounted and that the MAPI PF tree is available. Check using OL2K7 if Autodiscovery is working fine.

adgroup -> RE: outlook unable to connect to Exchange server (28.Jan.2009 6:04:42 AM)

hi

I am using OL2k3 on all clients, All clients are experiencing the same problem. No OL2K7 is installed in my network.I haven't seen any Public folder in MAILBOX under Server configuration. ALthough I have selected that I have Outlook 2003 is used in our organization during the installation of Exchange 2k7.
Now i have manually created Public Folder under first storage group., But how would I checked the MAPI PF tree ?
