Hey Folks,

I am working on transitioning to Exchange 07, transfered my first mailbox to the Exchange 07 box and it sends mail but it cannot receive mail.  Here's the nity grity:

Currently mail traffic is routed to an Exchange 03 box (V-1) and Exchange 07 is housed on V-4.  There is a RGC in place from V-1 to V-4 and V-4 mailboxes can send mail, but when I email a user on V-4 I get the following NDR:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, because the message was forwarded more than the maximum allowed times. This could indicate a mail loop.

    user@domain.com

Final-Recipient: rfc822;user@domain.com
Action: failed
Status: 4.4.6

V-4 has hub transport recieve connectors in place, currently the FQDN points to the external host name for V-1 [mail.domain.com] (so, this may be my problem)...  If i change the recieve connector to point to V-4 [V-4.domain.com] I get a diffrerent NDR (5.5.0 no domain found).

From V-1 I can telnet on port 25 to V-4, so I know Exchange 03 sees V-4...  Any suggestions on what connector I am missing?  Thanks.

Change the FQDN on the connector back to the way it was (default configuration). On the Default receive connector, make sure anonymous permission is selected as part of the permissions group, restart the Microsoft Exchange Transport service and try mail flow again.

No change, same NDR.  I have the two default receive connectors, should I eliminate one and run everything through a single one?  Thanks for the help thus far.

You should only have 1 Default receive connector and 1 Client receive connector!! If you have 2 default receive connectors and 1 client receive connector, then remove one and leave the other default receive connector and the client connector.

what permissions are set on the properties of the receive connector (not the client connector)?

Currently all permissions are check with the exception of Exchange Users:

Anonymous users
Exchange Servers
Legacy Exchange
Partners

Are all checked.

My Client onnector has Exchange users only checked.

Dont worry about the client connector as this is used to accept SMTP connections from non-MAPI clients. So to clarify:

E2K7user sends email to E2K3user --> Does mail go through?
E2K7user sends email to E2K7user --> Does mail go through?
E2K3user sends email to E2K7user --> Does mail go through?

E2K7 user sends email to E2K3 user --> Yes
E2K7 user sends email to E2K7 user --> Yes
E2K3 user sends email to E2K7 user --> No

Also,

Outside Source send email to E2K7user --> No
Outside Source send email to E2K3user --> Yes
E2K3 user send email to Outside Source--> Yes (but only through a relay server on the E2K3 SMTP Connector)
E2K7 user send email to Outside Source--> Yes (no relay server in E2K7)

All external Mail traffic is still being routed to the E2K3 server.

Can you spoof a message using telnet from E2K3 to E2K7? to do this,
  • Open a command prompt on E2K3 server and type
    • TELNET E2K7SERVER 25 then ENTER
    • EHLO then Enter
    • MAIL FROM: E2K3USER@YOURDOMAIN.COM then enter
    • RCPT TO: E2K7User@YOURDOMAIN.COM then enter
    • DATA then enter
    • Enter some text then Enter
    • enter a period (.) then enter to end the data section and queue the message

What are the results?

Blackman,

The telnet worked, the message showed up on the E2K7 user's mailbox, i dont believe it! Prior to the telnet test I deleted the RGC and recreated it VIA the exchange cmdlet.  mail sent the conventional way does not work still though.  Thanks for you assistance thus far.  What else could be causing this do you think?

**edit**  the cause of the 4.4.6 NDR was because I had a smat host setup in the virtual SMTP server for the E2K3 box.  Interestingly, If I route all external mail to the E2K7 box, it all gets routed appropriately.  Internal routing still fails.
