Dear All,
In my company, we have Exchange server 2007 environment :
-Two clustered mailbox servers.
-Two HUB/CAS servers .
-One GFI MailSecurity acts as a SMTP gateway.
Now for the sake of redundancy I installed an edge server . I did the edge subscription and verified the ADAM synchroinization. Now the GFI server is configured as a smart host to all domains (*) ,
with cost 1.
Now I dont have any issue in recieving emails from outside, for example if GFI is down I still recieve emails through edge which has less MX priority.
But the issue is in sending emails to outside:
The two HUB Transport servers are always choosing GFI server to send the oubound emails , not the edge. and moreover when I set the send connector of edge to cost (1) which equals the GFI send connector cost (1). the two HUB servers are still sending to the GFI even if it is down, and ignoring the edge server.
NOW in order to force the HUB transport servers to send to the edge instead of GFI, I have to manually disable the GFI send connector.
My Question :
How can I implement redundancy , by letting the HUB transport servers to send emails to GFI first, and in case the GFI is down, to send the emails to edge , in a failover fasion ?
Please note: I must use the GFI server and the edge. I know we can overcome this problem by setting up two edge servers. but these are the requirements . Please help.

Unfortunately, you can't have that type of redundancy in the routing anymore due to the removal of Link State Routing. When one connector goes down, you have to modify the cost of the downed connector to be a higher cost and then do a retry-queue with a -resubmit:$true so the mail goes through the categorization process again and then routes properly to the connector with the lowest cost.
Yes, I know... It does seem like a step backwards in that sense with Exchange 2007.

Thanks so much for the reply.
But again , if I set both connectors to cost 1 , The two HUB servers are still sending emails to GFI not to the edge, although both connectors have the same cost. Is there any workaround for this ?

Do you want to Round Robin it between the two? You can actually implement some type of redundancy in the routing. You can tweak the connector(s) so they use MX routing and create MX records internally with priorities set the way you want them. That way, either connector it uses, it'll use MX routing and either RR between the two if they have same priority, or go to the one you want it to first (lower priority) and if that fails then go to the other one.

Fine. But our DNS services are hosted by the ISP and our DNS doesnt have any MX records. So how can we accumplish this.?

As I said, you would use this method on Internal DNS. You need to have an understanding of how Send Connectors work and their use of either DNS or Smart Hosting. If you have Send Connectors that use DNS instead of Smarthosts and your Exchange Servers use DNS, you can set up MX records internally and adjust your priorities accordingly.
