I'm in the process of updating my first out of about 8 sites to Exchange 2007. In our Exchange 2003 environment, each mail server is configured to send its own email out to the Internet. However, since I installed Exchange 2007 at this site, all Internet bound email is being routed through my server. This is not desired in any way. 4 of my Exchange 2000//2003 installs are in Europe and only connected to the States via a VPN connection. So when a message gets sent from EU it has to come in across the Internet via the VPN and then back out through my Internet connection using SMTP. This is obviously not ideal. Also, the EU admins would much prefer being able to deal with their own external emails (and I'd rather not get a call at 2AM my time when it's part of their normal work day). So, how I can I configure it so all my mail server (Exchange 2000, 2003, and 2007) send their own Internet bound email? I've tried increasing the costs on my 2k7 routing groups connectors and the Internet connector on Exchange 2007 but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Thanks for any/all assistance.

That was it. It seems that our system didn't have any SMTP routing connectors for the Internet defined and therefore each server just handled its own SMTP connections. Once Exchange 2007 was installed and a routing connector was created, it took over all SMTP Internet routing. I created two new connectors that tell each server in that group they can send their own messages and everything seems to be working as expected again.
