Small Business Server 2008, so all Exchange roles are installed one one system. No other servers, Windows firewall, GFI Mail Essentials 14. Exchange BPA Health Check complains that I haven't set the incoming and outgoing message sizes, but no other errors.

Sending to one address generates an immediate 550 error from my server; it doesn't get out to the destination server at all. It doesn't even show up in the mail flow troubleshooting assistant. I get a bounce-back:

---------------------
Sent by Microsoft Exchange Server 2007

Diagnostic information for administrators:

Generating server: BPTC-SERVER.BioProcessConsultants.local

{person}@{domain}.com
ESMTP #550 Mailbox unavailable or access denied - <{person}@{domain}.com> ##
----------------------

It's as if it thinks that the address is local. Huh?

Hi,

Try sending a mail to the specified address by doing it with telnet directly on the Exchange server.

For an example how to do this see the following website:

Forgot to mention ... I found that very page by Googling and tried it. It was accepted. I didn't log the session.

Sorry for not giving the full picture initially. Yes, the problem was reported by a user and I tried it from my account with the same error message.

Hi,

OK that's strange if it works with telnet but not when sending via a client it should be a client issue. Also tried it via OWA ?

Could you please post the piece of logging where you can see it goes wrong or the e-mail you receive back ?

Also fails from OWA.

I re-tried the telnet session. When run from a domain-joined VM on my home computer, connected via VPN, after the RCPT it gives me "unable to relay". If I run it from a Remote Dektop connection ot the server, after the MAIL it gives me "User failed authentication" or something like that. I swear it worked from a domain-joined laptop connected to the internal network.

I bet it's something wrong in my ESMTP connector, but it's hard enought for me to find the feakin' thing in the new management console. I truly hate that new console.

Note that when I save the bounce-back form OUtlook as .txt, it is addressed not to me but to the addressee.

Oh, and I can't find any trace of the message in any of the tools in the "Tools" section of the management console. Probably in some text log file in some hidden corner of the system that I have to Google to find, rather than just making it avialable in the console.

Jon,

When telnet does not work from a client machine it probably has to do with the authentication settings on the smtp connector(s.

Can you please tel me which autentication settings you have selected ?

One thing I forgot to ask is if the address you try to send to is external ?

The address is external, but it seems Exchange thinks it's an internal mailbox and it doesn't exist.

"Default BPTC-Server" authentication is TLS, Basic, Basic only after TLS, Exchange Server, and Integrated Windows. "Windows SBS Internet Receive BPTC-Server" is TLS.

And now telnet definitely isn't working:

Jon,

Did you try to use the Exbpa to check if everything is correct ? Also try the mailflow troubleshooter to investigate the issue.

Exbpa gives me two critical issues: incoming message size not set, outgoing message size not set. And a few warnings that seem to be unrelated. See http://www.bioprocessconsultants.com/_Employees/ExBPA-20090511.htm.

Mailflow troubleshooter doesn't produce any relevant results, just a lot of informational items that are OK.

Hi,

The one about circular logging is an interesting one. It's not adviced to enable this because it overwrites logs which makes the change of recovery less then if this option is switched off.

Can you tell me to which user you are trying to send mail ? This may be via a private message if you like.
