Outlook Anywhere gives "outlook must be online or the exchange server is unavailable"

I Have a single server exchange 2007 sp1 installation on 2008 server x64.

I have a goDaddy SSL certificate owa.mydomain.com

OWA works fine (no certificate errors).

Installed the RPC over HTTP windows feature, enable Outlook Anywhere from the EMC, waited 15 minutes and checked the event id that it had installed OK.

If I go to http://owa.mydomain.com/rpc I get prompted to login - implying the RPC/HTTPS stuff is working OK?

If I run outlook.exe /rpcdiag I get "connecting" & then when I enter my credentials I get nothing in the diag box and outlook says it needs to be online or the exchange server is unavailable
I get the same result if I use Outlook 2003 on XP pro SP2 (ie I don't think it's a client issue - and I'm sure the Outlook config is correct (I know how to do that).

When I look in the security log on the exchange box I see 2 sucessful logon events for the user.

If I run test-outlookwebservices I get 1016,1015,1014 errors (AS, OAB,UM not configured for users)but all else seems OK, although I get a 1007 Information item:
"Testing server e2k7.domain.local with the published name https:// e2k7.domain.local/EWS/Exchange.asmx & ."

Do I need the external URL after the last "&" - does this imply that there is no service running against the external URL (badly phrased I know) or is the tool simply not testing against it?

Outlook works fine internally - with 2003 (don't have a 2007 licence avaiable internally) and if I force it to use the http/rpc (kludged the DNs to get it so see the "external" URL) Outlook with the RPC Diag switch seems to suggest it works (although not entirely convinced that Outlook is using https). This would suggest a firewalling issue, but at the moment all I'm doing is forwarding port 443 on to the exchange box from the external static adress

I'm a bit new to the exchange 2007 game and don't know where to go next so any help greatly appreciated

Hi Johan,

Many thanks for your reply.

The NSPI interface bit fails.
Attempting to ping RPC Endpoint 6004 (NSPI Proxy Interface) on server exchange.internal.local  Failed to ping Endpoint

Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve itAdditional Details   RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE error (0x6ba) was thrown by the RPC Runtime

I've followed the links suggest by the test results & can't telnet into port 6004. The MSKB suggest that I need to install RU4 for SP1, but the server has RU8 installed.

Regards,
Guy

Hi,

Did you do something with IPv6? This might cause some issues did you read the following post:

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/06/20/449053.aspx

If not using IPv6 try to disable it and check if it works.

Also very the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Rpc\Rpcproxy
It should contain the Netbios and FQDN's of your mailbox servers and port numbers.

I too am having a problem getting outlook anywhere to work. I have server 2008 SP2 and Ex07 SP1 RU8 on a single server. (I know..bad) but we are short on funds and that is wat I have to work with. OWA works, SSL is working. but outlook anywhere is failing. I went to testexchangeconnectivity.com and it returned this.

Sorry I haven't responded, have been on anual leave.

My problem is now fixed:
I disabled IPv6 (even though all the relevant rollups had been installed that MS say fix this) and followed these instructions http://messagexchange.blogspot.com/2008/12/outlook-anywhere-failing-rpc-end-points.html (apologies to the moderators if I'm not allowed to post a link in)

Note that I was running Exchange 2007 with all roles on a single Server 2008 box on a network that already had a DC running.

Good luck.

I think I'm having a totally different problem. I can't even ping the RPC Proxy, which is so strange cause everything else is working. I even bypassed the firewall temporarly to see if it was that. I'm stuck and its litterly my last step before I can put it in production.

I'm not really qualified to comment on this level of detail. Interesting that IIS is responding with the not found - whats in the IIS logs?

There are some posts that suggest disabling OA, uninstalling the RPC over HTTP and then in IIS making sure the RPC virtual directories have gone, reboot then reinstall in reverse order.
