We had a problem with outgoing e-mails that we took care of but users are saying that outgoing messages sent earlier in the morning have been confirmed to not be received by recipients (including test messages).

We notice that we have a mail.que that is time stamped for the exact time that we fixed the problem and its unusally larger then the mail.que files that are on our other mail servers so we think that the 'lost' outgoing messages are in this file. However the queues are empty and we thought that restarting the transport server would help but it did not. There are sensitive messages within this mail.que that still need to be transmitted in their original intended state. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Best thing you can start off with is this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124343.aspx
If you can't recover them based on that or at least go through the steps and tell us what happened when you followed each step we can't do a great deal.
