In an Exchange 2007 environment, if you have a remote user that is not logged on to the domain or using a VPN, can you setup Outlook Anywhere and make the initial connection to the server to resolve the server name and user name without a VPN connection? If so, what am I missing?

I was almost positive this could be done in Exchange 2003...but I can't remember for sure now.

I have just deployed a new Exchange 2007 server for a client. Now they have decided that they want 5 users at a remote facility to be able to use Exchange as well so they can get off of their ISP's POP email. The plan was to simply make those 5 users RPC over HTTP clients. When I was onsite at the mail location I configured two laptops with RPC over HTTP and they connected without issues and it works just fine for them when they are outside of the office. So I have verified that RPC o/HTTP is working properly.

But here is where the problem comes in. I have attempted a few times over the past year to configure RPC o/HTTP for remote clients and have had no success. I always end up initiating a VPN connection first then configuring RPC o/HTTP. That is the only way I have been able to get that initial connection to resovle the names. Now i'm in a situation where the client does not have a VPN connection to utilize for this scenario and they're a few states away so i can't just run over there and setup a temporary point to point VPN to get this done. Sooooooooo, can this even be done without a VPN connection?

Here are some different things I have tried when while attempting this from my office. When configuring the client I do not select the "check name" button. I went to the "more setting" button, clicked pasted the warning then proceeded to configure RPC o/HTTP. For the server name I have used the FQDN of servername.domainname.com, I have tried to used the OWA name of exchange.domainname.com, and I have also tried using just the netbios name of "servername". All attempts fail.

Not sure on relevance but have you set up the Autodiscover DNS?

Yes, autodiscover is configured in DNS and it's on the certificate as well.
